People die every day. Some of them are famous, some important, many newsworthy. This thread is for announcements of deaths in the news, discussions of the legacy of those recently deceased people, and memorials of same.
Please observe the usual rules about posting ettiquette and note that this is in On-Topic Conversations.
To start with, the last of the original Von Trapp Singers has died, Maria Von Trapp, 99, in Vermont. (This is the daughter of Captain Von Trapp, not her stepmother who was also named Maria. In the musical, they called her Louisa.) http://news.yahoo.com/maria-von-trapp-99-dies-vermont-005546425.html
2023 mod note:
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.
This doesn't mean that you can't discuss their life or legacy, or express an opinion as to whether they escaped justice for their actions. But if that starts to become a longer conversation, there are other OTC threads that may be more appropriate.

Kinda makes his cameo in Insomniac's Spider-man bittersweet...
This is very heart wrenching to hear. I’m sure we’ve all made jokes about Stan Lee is unable to die because of his godlike talent and such, but really we knew the day would come. Still, it is very heartwarming for all of the different cameos he has made for many Marvel films and shows, even if the starring characters aren’t his. I especially find it heartwarming that he recently had his first and only speaking role in a DC property the Teen Titans Go! Movie. RIP Mr. Stan Lee. I never got a chance to meet you in one of those conventions, but after all the things you have brought us, I probably didn’t need to.
So does anyone know the cause of death, I mean I know he was 95 but I heard he was rushed to the hospital first.
Actually, Stan had a speaking role in Mallrats. Highly maligned by cinema snobs, but I think worth seeing if you're a Kevin Smith fan... or a Stan Lee fan.
Who are the ones that we kept in charge? Killers, thieves, and lawyers. God's away, god's away, god's away on business... business. Many have dreaded this day for a long time. As a fellow cartoonist, and a comic book fan, I thank you for everything you've done, Stan the Man.
Srg. Dornan: Troper, what are you doing here?! Get back to your post!!!It's too early to say. I'm sure more info will be up tomorrow.
Srg. Dornan: Troper, what are you doing here?! Get back to your post!!!Excelsior, Stan.
Angry gets shit done.I just found out that Stan Lee knew Dr Seuss (They were in the US signal corps during WW 2)
You're going to pay a price for every bloody thing you do and everything you don't do. You don't get to choose to not pay a price.Ngl, had no idea many people apparently had axes to grind with him , judging from all the "Stan Lee was fame-hungry and overshadowed Kirby and Ditko" takes
Are they trying to make up for Steve Jobs 7 years ago?
I've seen people gloating about it on Twitter. Hopefully, they just trolls, but still.
Srg. Dornan: Troper, what are you doing here?! Get back to your post!!!The whole "Stan Lee stole the fame from Kirby and Ditko" thing has been going on for years. But I don't think it matters in the end...Stan Lee wouldn't be Stan Lee without Kirby and Ditko, but based on the work those two did on their own, they wouldn't be Kirby and Ditko without Stan Lee either. And the fact of the matter is that Kirby and Ditko weren't really big on the spotlight, while he was.
It is strange that Stan Lee is dead, but then, it wasn't really surprising either. After his wife died, I kind of keep waiting for it...and so did everyone else. There is a reason why his cameos for Phase 3 were filmed in advance.

I was on the same sentiment after Joan died. At least Joan's not alone now.
ᜇᜎᜈ᜔ᜇᜈ᜔|I DO COMMISSIONS|ᜇᜎᜈ᜔ᜇᜈ᜔I also figured Stan probably didn't have much longer after Joan's death.

Expergiscēre cras, medior quam hodie. (Awaken tomorrow, better than today.)Are ya ready kids ?!
No... No I was not.
This hit a lot harder than I thought it would.
Pretty much, his work really was a part of my life, honestly, a fair amount of my humor sense come from watching Spongebob. This really is...sad.
Watch me destroying my countryUgh. We need a cure for ALS now.
My God. After seeing him on all these Marvel movies, since I am a fan of the franchise, he was like an everlasting presence, he was always there no matter how much he aged, until now that is. I wonder if the next Marvel movie will have a nod to this instead of the usual cameo.
Life is unfair...
