And again with the CamelCase link. Fixed.
"For a successful technology, reality must take precedence over public relations, for Nature cannot be fooled." - Richard FeynmanI think you beat me to the post by a few seconds there.
I have absolutely no idea what this page is about.
"For a successful technology, reality must take precedence over public relations, for Nature cannot be fooled." - Richard FeynmanWow, what an odd page. Yes, a character being selfish for a variety of reasons is a trope. No, splitting this into good/evil/lawful/chaotic doesn't help in describing that trope.
The examples the page gives in Selfish Good seem to focus on one aspect of a character's personality, while ignoring anything that opposes the trope.
Lawfull Selfish seems to be Piggybacking on Hitler but without the instant Nazi connotations.
Chaotic Selfish seems to be plain old wild card.
Neutral Selfish seems to be Only in It for the Money from the description he gave.
"You like Castlevania, don't you?"Sure, being selfish is a character trait that could work as a trope, but not like this. This is just feels like a shoehorned alignment trope. It somehow manages to be both too specific and too general.
Check out my fanfiction! This is at best worth of a cut, as it's a mangled mess otherwise.
"For a successful technology, reality must take precedence over public relations, for Nature cannot be fooled." - Richard Feynman+1 to cut it, it seems like it's too much of a mess to salvage.
Cut it.
Found a Youtube Channel with political stances you want to share? Hop on over to this page and add them.Yes, cut it.
Agree to cut. This page is too much of a mess.
Bigotry will NEVER be welcome on TV Tropes.Cut it
"You like Castlevania, don't you?"Well, seems we have got consensus here. Barring objections, I will execute the removal over the weekend.
"For a successful technology, reality must take precedence over public relations, for Nature cannot be fooled." - Richard Feynman'Kay, the cut request was accepted. I already tagged the discussion and cutlisted the quotes page; asking for a lock.

This whole page is a mess. It's supposed to be additional possibilities for D&D-style Character Alignment, but that system already treats selfishness as evil, so this amounts to Good Evil, Lawful Evil, Chaotic Evil and Evil Evil.
- Selfish Good's two definitions are just Not in This for Your Revolution and Jerk with a Heart of Gold respectively (the latter implying that a standard Jerk with a Heart of Gold will always betray their friends). Most of the examples follow neither definition, being stuff like Pragmatic Villainy, Evil Versus Evil, and "good guy who really hates his Arch-Enemy". Essentially it's confusing "Good" with "protagonist".
- The description of Lawful Selfish is just Lawful Evil. None of the examples cover the part where their goal is to "accumulate enough power to become supreme ruler of everything" (how does Shinji Ikari cover that part?).
- The description of Neutral Selfish amounts to True Neutral. It says they "have no friends and no enemies", but at least half the examples ignore this (and the videogame examples are just characters without a defined personality).
- The description of Chaotic Selfish is just "aversion of Chaotic Stupid", and talks more about the character's role in the story than their personality.
- Selfish Evil is just Evil.
Most of the "X Selfish" alignments seem to be after "X who doesn't value friendship"... except that the distinguishing point of Type 2 Selfish Good is that it does value friendship.None of these are established terms outside this site either - "Selfish Evil" originates from Belkar's alignment in the The Order of the Stick board game, but that was intended as a joke and possibly for copyright reasons (he's canonically Chaotic Evil, and the game placed the other characters as "Beleaguered Good", "Foolish Good", "Chaotic Greedy", "Lawful Bland" and "Arrogant Neutral").
