TLP Crash Rescue - Fixing prematurely launched TLPs and pages

Go To

Prematurely launched pages and pages that weren't fully fleshed out at the point of launching, are a big problem. Since these usually share several problems at once, this thread is aimed at re-running them through the TLP for fixing - the usual fix - or cutting them if they are too bad.

Problems this thread deals with include bad names, not enough/bad examples, unclear description, etc.

For the interested, here's a list of recently created pages. Launches

Note: Please do not request a mod to unlaunch drafts that don't have any issues besides lacking a launch notice/24hr launch notice. While 24hr launch notices are mandatory, there are a few exceptions to the rule. If you see a draft's sponsor launch a TLP without an announcement, it's best to remind them of our TLP Guidelines first. If they continue to repeatedly launch drafts without a launch notice, you can report them on Ask The Tropers or the TLP Community Issues thread.

Checking history confirms that there was no announcement given for the draft.

Stopping the Blame Game was stealth-launched. AGAIN.

EDIT: Okay, they did announce that they were "launching soon". The problem is, I'm used to when the launch announcement is in the title/laconic description itself, like "Draft name/description (Launching [launch date])". Maybe it's just me. Eh, it's up for you mods to decide.

[up]Actually, there was a notice in a comment. Does that still count as a stealth launch?

[up] Technically that's not a stealth launch. Just harder to notice, especially if you're just scrolling through TLP.

Titles trope and other meta/trivia tropes don't count towards the rule of three, though. They have to be plot or character tropes.

Not to my knowledge. But even adding those would only promote the page from "automatic cut" to "stub page listed on Needs Wiki Magic Love", which isn't a solution. If the page cannot be made healthy enough to avoid NWML, then it should still get cut.

Related, I've found Fanfic.Guardians Of The Universe, and I'm making a note of it here so that I remember to cut the page if the creator/someone doesn't fix the problems within a week.

Adembergz has gone on a splurge of creating pages that are just one line such as WebGame.Red Ball with the non existent namespace, Franchise.Red Ball, a franchise page for the one aforementioned game and so on

So, I'm kinda tempted to run the experiment again, though differently than I did it before. My "Mad Experimentation" draft was so over the top it was basically just a parody of bad TLP drafts- a fun little romp, but it taught us nothing.

However, I'm still noticing drafts getting a frankly absurd amount of hats for no particular reason, just because people like the premise (I have to assume; this trope got 8 hats over night for no other explainable reason. And the hat count is still growing.)

Obviously if I do this again I'd need to tread much more carefully:

  • We don't want another shitposting magnet. Even if it's done because it's a silly joke draft and not at someone's expense this time, it's still something we want to avoid.
  • One of the biggest issues with the first experiment was that I made it way too obvious the draft was a joke, so it was impossible to tell if the hats were people just trolling or if they were genuinely falling for the experiment. This means that if I do this again, nobody but me and the mods will be allowed to know which draft I'm doing the experiment on- it'll be a pure test of the TLP's quality control abilities rather than just a basic reading test.
  • But then that leads to another concern, which is accidentally making something good and nullifying the entire point of the experiment. I'd have to somehow ride the line between "draft that doesn't deserve hats" and "not an obvious joke on my part", since I'm prolific enough on the TLP for people to probably realize that if my draft is in poor condition, it's probably not a legit draft. If anything, being the one to do it would probably just make the experiment fail again.

I'm not sure if this is something feasible to do anymore thanks to everything that has happened since the original experiment took place, but I do think it'd be more revealing if I do it properly. But maybe it's also unnecessary, since we already know the people of the TLP will hat anything that passes an arbitrary sniff test regardless of the actual condition it's in. But idk...for a while the big concern was people excessively bombing and being rude to draft makers, and now I think we've circled back around to hats being the biggest problem.

Hmmm...maybe make a draft that's actually a good idea as opposed to chairs, but full of formatting mistakes? Like maybe take an existing draft concept, like one of your own (if you use someone else's idea you'd obviously ask them first), and rework it so it's in deliberate bad condition, but not obviously so. And still hide the "this is an experiment" thing in the description.

Do you think people would notice if it was still you doing the experiment? Should it be somebody else this time? I don't think random hatters really notice the name of the proposer, though. Of course this is all assuming the mods are okay with this happening again.

Yeah, that's another thing, I'd only do it if the mods agree and even then I might get cold feet this time since I don't want to accidentally cause another TLP incident.

I'm also uncomfortable with taking one of my own draft ideas and making it bad, if only because I'd either have to make a dupe draft or ruin one of the projects I'm actually passionate about, and neither sounds like a good idea.

Plus, the fact that drive-by-hatters are the big issue here means that any experiment might be doomed to fail just because drive-by-hatters have no real pattern. We could theoretically make 100 different experiment drafts and never get a solid conclusion, simply because drive-by-hatters are arbitrary as fuck when making their choices and never post to explain their thoughts, so there's no telling what they'd be hatting and why they're doing it, and why they all decide to congregate on specific drafts and ignore other ones.

...Yeah, I'm not sure this is doable. Taking everything into account, the best case scenario will still not be a proper scientific analysis of the community. There's just too many variables.

Well, I'd volunteer a draft idea that's been kicking around in my head because I'd actually love to get it onto TLP to gather examples but I don't feel like writing up a description (or even thinking of a decent title).

The trope I'm thinking is something along the lines of "black barbershops being used as urban places of hangout and discussion" but I really don't feel like writing up the history of haircutting being seen as an unskilled trade or especially the fact that black people and white people have different hair. And it would invite some great examples such as

Maybe I'm just not brave enough to do this experiment properly, regardless of if the mods agree again. This is all a hypothetical right now.
