Join Us Saturday, October 12th @ ~8:00PM (US/EDT) Here: http://cytu.be/r/TroperCoven

For the uninitiated... A contingent of tropers (mostly from across America) holds regular get-togethers over the Interwebs on this site called Synchtube which lets individuals, such as ourselves, open and join in text-based chatrooms within typical web browsers (Firefox, Chrome, et. al.) that allow the chat participants to view YouTube videos in synchronization with everyone else present (without even needing to set up an account)... and we've decided to use said chatrooms to play cheeseball webvideos and feature-length movies found in the public domain which stretch all the way from letters B to Z, which everyone subsequently riffs on a la MST3K.

For over EIGHT years, everybody who gets involved mostly finds good enjoymentnote  in calling out tropes that are recognized in the videos and stories and coming up with jokes to fling back at whatever's happening on the screen, many of which turn into various in-jokes and running gags (a Coven Glossary is kept and maintained for everyone's help and convenience HERE) to repeat in the chat.

We're always looking for new ways to better coordinate and expand our activities and are more than happy to welcome newcomers interested in joining our gatherings.

I've been watching The Kentucky Fried Movie, Rock N Roll High School, Citizen Kane... One of those is not like the other, right?

While a terrible film based on a half-hour toy commercial sounds appealing, whether I make it or not depends on whether my family interferes and makes me do something else.

I'll definitely be there tonight. Sorry I haven't been around much lately. Been kind of out of sorts, and last week I had some relationship issues that didn't help.

I think taking time off from trash to check out treasure isn't bad. Wild was based on a true story, after all. It's not Citizen Kane or likely in its class, but it's arguably closer to that than it is to the things we generally watch. Arguably.

After all, even if you didn't know it was based on a true story, the movie's content is essentially an F-bomb dropping woman hikes 1100 miles and encounters various adventures in the process. It feels like the sort of thing that could just as easily be fiction as reality, which is part of the fun - it's a true story, and yet its mixture of adventure and drama (mostly adventure) feels like the sort of thing Hollywood might normally pull out of its ass. In other words, it feels familiar and fun. As a bonus, it does not do the orange/blue shit that Hollywood does all the time these days. Actual genuine colors exist, making it look beautiful. For a movie where scenery is a big part of the appeal, I'd demand that.

Even if we did watch "good" movies more often, it's just not riffable. Enjoyable, but not riffable.

I just thought of something. How about we all submit our birthdays, and when each member's birthday comes around, we watch any movie of that person's choosing? Just a thought to mix things up a bit. We have about 20+ members including both regulars and non-regulars, so out of 365 days, I don't think we'd have that many days taken up.

So when June comes around we'll finally be able to watch The Brave Frog?

What if two people have the same birthday?

My birthday's just over a month from now.

I imagine if two people had the same birthday, we'd run one person's movie first, then the other after.

Also, if a person can't attend for their birthday, we'd run the movie on the nearest date afterward that they can attend.

Of course, this is all just an idea of mine. Sean's the boss and he'd have to okay it.

If we did do it, I wonder if there would still be specific rules to follow, like "nothing that's too well-known" or "it should still have something riffable about it", or if instead it could be used by people to show anything, even well-known films and classics or recent releases like The Hunger Games series.

Our group seems to be about multiple things. Riffing cheesy movies, but also there's a preference for the more obscure, lesser-known. If we watched something that wasn't cheesy for a group member's birthday, maybe the "not too popular" rule would still apply, so people would still be exposed to something that's new to them. Wild is lesser-known, so I'd apply for that for my birthday film.

A bit short notice, but we're gonna be having an expedited pre-show tonight.

If you're planning on checking out Masters of the Universe with us tonight and do not want to miss a single second of it, we plan on starting the movie at 7:45 PM (EDT)!

Until then, we got another episode of Where in Time is Carmen Sandiego? to get us in the mood for the big occasion.

The cartoon's Skeletor was much better. Fun dumb movie though. Yet another in the "take them out of their world and shove them into Earth" genre.

Oh, Ho-Oh-HOOOOOOOOOOooooooooooooooooo...

It's Kung Fu Friday again, and this week, we're looking to revisit Jackie Chan in City Hunter.

As it turns out, Jackie Chan wrote only one sentence on this movie in his autobiography, I Am Jackie Chan—"Don't see it."

Soooo... All the more reason to see it again! And, knowing that this one has earned a [awesome][awesome][awesome] rating from us previously, I can't figure out what the fuss would be about.

Jackie Chan has expressed opinions on the Rush Hour movies, telling Chinese audiences "They're not that good. They're pretty stupid."

In the case of the third, most Americans would seem to agree.

[up][up]That is to say, "Chris Tucker is pretty stupid."

Given that much of the movies' "humor" derives from cultural differences between the two lead characters—as imagined by a team of American filmmakers—I'd feel awkward about telling a Chinese audience to check those movies out, too.

Yeah, I only saw the first one, but liked it enough. I'd read that a lot of the humor was about that.

Jackie Chan, during one of the outtakes, started teasing Chris Tucker about the scene where he had to speak in Chinese: "See? See how difficult I am! I had to learn whole new language! You can't speak THREE words!"

Lo and behold, video of Jackie Chan on working with Chris Tucker.

My favorite moment: Jackie's anecdote on showing up a half-hour early for a 7:00 AM call time (read: "the scheduled time actors are expected to report to a filming location") while Chris Tucker doesn't show up until 11:00 AM. Now ask yourself, "What would MY co-workers think of me, if I was four hours late for work?"

Video blocked at work. Dang. Wish I could see it now. I hope I don't forget to watch it later.

Any other particularly good parts? Did Chan like Tucker?

SeanMurrayI Since: Jan, 2010
#12470: Apr 17th 2015 at 10:52:30 AM

Essentially, Chan brings up Chris Tucker in response to being asked about actors he has worked with that led to a friendship/professional relationship that "means a lot to him".

I suppose that means he's more fond of his time spent with Chris Tucker nowadays, but he does say that he "[didn't] like him in the beginning."

Oh, Ho-Oh-HOOOOOOOOOooooooooooooooo...

So we're kicking off Kung Fu Friday right at this very moment with a hefty dose of Godfrey Ho, as well as Kowabunga—the Pro-Wrestling Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle.

Then, at the top of the coming hour, we revisit Jackie Chan in the classic City Hunter.

I decided to reread Cracked's 6 Terrifying Children's Cartoons from around the World. The Plague Dogs is on You Tube, last I checked. Full-length animated movie, and it contains some really fucked up shit. I'll let you just read the article's description of it. evil grin
