Real Life section maintenance

Go To

Note: If a newly launched trope was already given a No Real Life Examples, Please! or Limited Real Life Examples Only designation while it was being drafted on the Trope Launch Pad, additions to the proper index do not need to go through this thread. Instead, simply ask the mods to add the trope via this thread.

This is the thread to report tropes with problematic Real Life sections.

Common problems include:

Real Life sections on the wiki are kept as long as they don't become a problem. If you find an article with such problems, report it here. Please note that the purpose of this thread is to clean up and maintain real life sections, not raze them. Cutting should be treated as a last resort, so please only suggest cutting RL sections or a subset thereof you think the examples in question are completely unsalvageable.

If historical RL examples are not causing any problems, consider whether it would be better to propose a No Recent Examples, Please! (via this forum thread) for RL instead of NRLEP. If RL examples are causing problems only for certain subjects, consider whether a Limited Real Life Examples Only restriction would be preferable to NRLEP.

If you think a trope should be No Real Life Examples, Please! or Limited Real Life Examples Only, then this thread is the place to discuss it. However, please check Keep Real Life Examples first to see if it has already been brought up in the past. If not, state the reasons and add it to the crowner.

Before adding to the crowner:

  • The trope should be proposed in the thread, along with reasons for why a crowner is necessary instead of a cleanup.
  • There must be support from others in thread.
  • Any objections should be addressed.
  • Allow a minimum of 24 hours for discussion.

When adding to the crowner:

  • Be sure to add the trope name, a link to where the discussion started, the reasons for crownering, whether the restriction being proposed is NRLEP or LRLEO (and in the latter case, which subject(s) the restriction would be for), and the date added.
  • Announce in thread that you are adding the item.
  • An ATT advert should be made as well (batch items together if more than one trope goes up in a day).

In order for a crowner to pass:

  • Must have been up for a minimum of a week
  • There must be a 2:1 ratio
  • If the vote is exactly 2:1 or +/- 1 vote from that, give it a couple extra days to see if any more votes come in
  • Once passed, tropes must be indexed on the appropriate NRLEP index
  • Should the vote fail, the trope should be indexed on KRLE page

Sex Tropes, Rape and Sexual Harassment Tropes, and Morality Tropes are banned from having RL sections so tropes under those indexes don't need a crowner vote.

As per Real Life Troping, we never trope unscripted real life sports — so sports tropes where RL examples would only apply to those scenarios don't need a crowner vote.

Crowner entries that have already been called will have "(CLOSED)" appended to them — and are no longer open for discussion.

After bringing up a trope for discussion, please wait at least a day for feedback before adding it to the crowner.

NRLEP tag:

LRLEO tag:

%%The following restrictions apply: [list restriction(s) here]

Notes:
  • This thread is not for general discussion regarding policies for Real Life sections or crowners. Please take those conversations to this Wiki Talk thread.
  • Do not try to overturn previous No Real Life Examples, Please! or Limited Real Life Examples Only decisions without a convincing argument.
  • As mentioned here, the consensus is that NRLEP warnings in trope page descriptions can use bold text so that they stand out.
  • The [[noreallife]] tag doesn't currently work. This is a deprecated tag that was introduced many years ago — originally, it would have displayed a NRLEP warning banner when you edited the page. However, there's been some staff conversation (Feb 2024) about what a new technical solution might look like, so we'd advise against deleting these from pages, at least until we have a decision as to whether it'll be fixed or replaced.

Some of those entries strike me as the kind of thing where a lot of stuff is thrown at the wall and something happens to stick. Sort of like all the time The Simpsons ran a "Trump as President" spoof.

It would probably be rejected, but I think Obfuscating Insanity should also be NRLEP.

It's more you should give us a reason why we should add it to the crowner.

Saying ideas for the sake of it really don't help. Just give us a reason, and we'll discuss it. smile

Adding Cassandra Truth to the crowner for the mentioned reasons, namely gossip, speculation, shoehorning, the coincidental nature of the trope when in RL

[up] Even with the "diagnosed people only" limitation, I'm still kind of wary of listing RL people. However, we have allowed RL entries for Dirty Cop where the "dirty" was documented with convictions in a court, so there is precedent.

So far it looks like Cassandra Truth isn't doing so well, as it's been hovering around the 1:1 ratio since shortly after it was added. Waiting until Monday to call it because of the weekend thing, but barring some spectacular change of voting it's probably going to be called on Monday keep RL examples. Added on 15th Aug '17 at 05:33:11 PM, 7:7 (14)

I'd like to nominate Ambiguously Human. It seems distasteful.

"Distasteful" is more an appeal to emotion than a reason to NRLEP. You could try to make a case under "Gossip and Stereotypes", but I'd disagree.

From a quick look, the section might need a scrubbing, though.

Thing is, there's nothing ambiguous about them. There were beliefs that some people weren't human, but that's not what the trope is. It's about characters who seem like humans, with something being off about them that marks them as probably non-human.

Some are about scientific definitions, which is also not quite what the trope is. For those it's the classification of "human" that's ambiguous, not the examples.

None of those examples fit the trope anyway, so whether or not we NRLEP it, they need to be deleted.

[up] I'm sorry that I could not make a better argument for Ambiguously Human. The examples just squicked the hell out of me.

Permission to delete those as misuse, then? In that case there would really be no need to vote and put it on the index.

Head-in-the-Sand Management is a no real life examples page, but the connected quotes page has a bunch of real life quotes. Do those need to be nuked? (There's probably a more general question of quotes pages attached to no real life example pages.)

I would say that if they point towards any real people or companies, they should be deleted. If they're about the concept, they can probably stay. Or just delete all of them.

Ya know, it has been suggested in the moderator discussion that this thread has served its purpose, as most highly problematic real life sections are gone and because some of us have a perception that it is rather cavalier at cutting stuff. Does anyone think that it is still needed?

FTR, even if this thread is closed you can still bring up a problematic Real Life section. Just that you now would make a dedicated TRS topic.

[up]Difficult question. It seems to me that the activity has gone down quite a bit, and that more and more requests are being voted down.

I don't have a problem with bringing suggestions for making a trope NRLEP to TRS.

I do think, however, that considering how overloaded TRS seems to be, that there should be a quicker way to clean up problematic real-life sections without removing them altogether. After all, in most cases that's "just" a case of removing non-examples, shoehorning and flamebait, which normally shouldn't require a TRS thread. Perhaps such cases could just be discussed in the trope's discussion page? Or perhaps we should keep this thread but not let it decide on NRLEP status?

#6846: Sep 1st 2017 at 9:03:16 AM

Most of these problems don't require urgent action, quick fix TRS topics are generally processed quickly and decisions whether to keep or cut a Real Life section are quick fixes as only a few simple edits are needed. We also have the NATTER ALERT, 5P Cleanup pile and Lewdness issues, Is this an Example? and Ask The Tropers topics for some of the common issues. So I think we are covered on this point.

[up]The only problem would be if we have a RL section that exhibits a bunch of problems, as they often do, for example natter, troping real people, shoehorning, etc — should it then be brought up in many of these threads separately?

Or would it be enough to bring it up in the trope's own discussion page?

I think that bringing it up only in one place would suffice.

I think this thread is still useful -but we need to put much more of an emphasis on the MAINTENANCE part of the title. There's too much thinking that RL sections come here to die (to be mildly hyperbolic).

Yeah, I am not convinced that this kind of culture change can be forced that easily. Part of the reason why I am proposing a radical change. The other being to remove bureaucratic systems.

Crown Description:

Vote up to either forbid all real life examples (No Real Life Examples Please) or forbid real life examples for specific subjects (Limited Real Life Examples Only); vote down to Keep Real Life Examples. To add a trope to a No Real Life Examples Please index or the Limited Real Life Examples Only index, its crowner option must meet the following criteria:
  • Stable 2:1 ratio needed for NRLEP or LRLEO
  • The item have been on the crowne for a minimum of a week
  • If the vote is exactly 2:1 or +/- 1 vote from that, give it a couple of extra days to see if more votes come in.

After you bring up a trope for discussion, please try to wait at least a day or so for feedback before adding it to the crowner.

If an item has a (CLOSED) note, there is no need to vote on it: the result has already been decided and it's no longer up for discussion.
