And I thought my country's broadband infrastructure had issues...

One thing to note: ISPs are not introducing a more expensive fast lane. The speed of data transmission is a property of the material the wires are made of - in other words, it moves through fibre at the speed of light, and somewhat slower through copper but still pretty speedily. This is because of physics, and the only way to change that speed is to use software to delay the sending and routing of packets.

In other words, a more accurate analogy would be that ISPs are building a slow lane and trying to charge extra to use the normal-speed lane.

Yeah, that's what all of us programmers and computer scientists knew. IS Ps weren't going to upgrade their service to the level seen in European or other first-world countries; they were going to bottleneck your traffic and charge extra to remove that bottleneck.

Kinda like how game companies do it with the game grind.

Jim's take on Yoshi's Crafted World:

Jim's take is that it's a fun little game that speaks for itself, proves a game doesn't have to be insanely hard (like Sekiro) or have top-gen graphics (like damn never every AAA game these days) to be a good game, and that one is probably wasting their time watching a review of it or making a review of it when they could just be playing the game. So...go play the game.

One of the Youtube comments I noticed:

"You play the game and you unlock costumes... what is this madness my credit card isn't leaving my wallet nearly enough."

Y'all remember when that sort of thing used to be the norm rather than a refreshing change of pace?

Fuckin tell me about it

And yes I've always championed that a game doesn't have to be hard to be engaging.

Jim really captures why liassez-faire economics is a terrible idea (and why I'm a socialist).

It's interesting to note that Epic's and Valve's endgame was portrayed as the ideal state of affairs in Atlas Shrugged, which if not the foundational text of neoliberalism is at least part of the canon. In the novel all the capitalists have gone off in a huff because the evil, worthless mass of humanity disagrees with them that the acquisition of wealth is all-important, and they come to a place named Galt's Gulch. While the novel states that competition is awesome and is what drives the worthwhile individuals to do things that are worthwhile, there is no competition of any kind in Galt's Gulch. John Galt and a couple of apprentices supply the power, there's one guy drilling for oil, one woman fishing, one guy farming tobacco (tobacco is very important), and so on. One bloke did set up as a toolmaker when there was already one there, but he quickly outcompeted the existing guy and ran him out of business, but it was all OK because the fellow who lost everything got a good job at the other chap's factory as a consolation prize. That factory owner knows that the same thing will happen to him when Hank Rearden arrives, but that's totally fine because obviously Hank will give an even better service. Nobody is running a railway of any sort, because Dagny has to be the one to do that.

Of course, the fact that this state of being requires everyone to be actually okay with being outcompeted when playing fair and a perpetual motion machine is almost never brought up by people who live by it.

“There are two novels that can change a bookish fourteen-year old’s life: The Lord of the Rings and Atlas Shrugged. One is a childish fantasy that often engenders a lifelong obsession with its unbelievable heroes, leading to an emotionally stunted, socially crippled adulthood, unable to deal with the real world. The other, of course, involves orcs." -Some smart guy.

One has to remember that Ayn Rand was someone who grew up witnessing the very worst of socialism. As a result, she devoted her life to preaching the opposite of socialism.

But the solution to one extreme is rarely ever the opposite extreme. You don't solve the problems of an oppressive state-controlled economy by going full lolbertarian.

[up]I actually read The Fountainhead in middle school for a book report. It's probably for the best that I didn't take it very seriously.

I usually read whole books I was supposed to read along with the whole class because I'm like that, if I wasn't goofing off reading everything else that caught my fancy at my school's libraries.

At some point, the game industry is going to run out of feet to shoot itself on.

Who knows what they'll start shooting then.

[up]A human centipede!

OK, I just wanted to make a gross reference, but it actually fits. The company in front does something shit, and shits the result of that shit into the mouth of the company behind them, who does the same shit but starting with shit and then shits in the mouth of the next company down, who again does shit but this time with twice-processed shit, and so on and so forth. When it gets to the end, the last company shits on their customers, but that shit is made from shit that has been processed through several metaphorical stomachs in succession.

That has to be the most disgusting metaphor I've ever come up with. Jim, if you read this thread, feel free to use that one.
