Which namespace does this work belong in?

Go To

This is the sticky thread for questions related to the namespacing of works. As in, "which is the right namespace for this work?"

Ideally, questions already answered are covered on the Namespace Map. If you know a namespacing issue has already been resolved, but it is not yet documented on the Map, please update the Map.

If you want to suggest a new namespace, don't post here, but in Suggesting New Namespaces instead.

    Original OP:
I busy myself with moving works off of Main/ and I've encountered a number of cases where I can't decide to which namespace something should go. Some of these questions may have been asked before, but there seems to be no general reference point for namespace issues. Maybe this could become a sticky thread for all media-namespace related questions?

For easier reference, I've numbered my questions:

  • #1: Where do animated films go? They seem to be distributed rather inconsistenly over Film/ (Puss In Boots, Whats Opera Doc), WesternAnimation/ (Disneys Anne Frank, Snow White), Anime/ (Princess Mononoke) and Disney/ (Snow White And The Seven Dwarfs, Der Fuehrers Face).
  • #2: There are a few songs which have their own pages ("Pirate Jenny"). Where do they go – to Music/ or to Literature/ ?
  • #3: Where do composers go – to Music/ , or are they to be treated like other creators, which hitherto stay on Main/ ?
  • #4: Where do Talk Shows, Game Shows and News Broadcasts go? I guess you could call these formats Live-Action TV but they're not really "TV series", as in Series/.
  • #5: Am I right in assuming that Puppet Shows go to Series/ ?
  • #6: What about “hybrid shows”, i.e. segment shows that incorporate both live action and animation? (e.g. Die Sendung Mit Der Maus)
  • #7: Where to put picture books? I am thinking of books like Der Struwwelpeter and Max and Moritz — books that are really not complete without their illustrations. They are not (yet) ComicBook/s, but to sort them under Literature/ feels a little unsatisfactory too.
  • #8: The rule is to put works into the namespace of their original medium. However, once in a while there is a work which is little known in its original medium, and almost exclusively known by its adaptation. I’m thinking of Das Boot, for example: there's a novel, but it is almost exclusively known by the Petersen movie.
  • #9: Should One Book Authors who are invariably tied to a single work be treated as a creator or a work page rather?— Currently, we have Samuel Pepys and Herodotus, but shouldn't these pages be at Literature/The Diary of Samuel Pepys and Literature/The Histories rather?
  • #10: There are cases where I’m unsure whether to use the English or the original title. Is there are hard rule that determines whether Der Ring Des Nibelungen goes to Theatre/Der Ring des Nibelungen or Theatre/The Ring of the Nibelung? Even Wikipedia uses the original title.

I'd be grateful for input.

Since the page is about him as a person and his works, it should indeed be in the Creator/ namespace.

WebOriginal.Snarled is primarily live-action video, so it should probably go in WebVideo/.

Hey question does a series of YTPs consisting of both live-action and animated sources go in WebVideo/ or WebAnimation/

I moved most of the page formerly at Creator.Da Things 1 to WebVideo.Da Things (since it definitely isn't being used like a creator page), realized "oh wait YTP typically goes under WebAnimation/ because WebVideo/ is for live action stuff", moved it again to WebAnimation.Da Things, and then realized "oh wait a lot of DaThings is poops of live-action stuff? ... but not all of it?"

kinda losing my mind rn trying to figure this out

I'd stick with Web Animation, as YTP is primarily animation.

Looking at the list of works on You Tube Poop, there does not seem to be any consistency in whether they are namespaced into WebAnimation/ or WebVideo/.

Should a page for an animator that covers all of their (short) works go in Creator/ or WebAnimation/?

[up] There's a number of poets (see Poetry) whose short works are troped on their pages, so there's precedence for the former.

If it's the works are part of The 'Verse, it can be a single-medium franchise. If they're all uploaded to the same channel, that can also be a single-medium franchise. Otherwise, use the Creator/ namespace.

Planning to make a work page for the Undertale/CrashBandicoot crossover Alternate Universe Banditale, which consists of music, character and setting illustrations, and some animated scenes (can be found in the music playlist). I'm wondering which namespace is best to put this in.

Pick the original medium that the work takes place in.

I'm working on a page for a work called Liv in the Future, which is original fiction hosted on an app (Litty) in chapter format but has narration, dialogue, etc. presented in a style similar to text messages and has background images. I'm trying to figure out if it counts as Web Original Fiction or a Web Serial Novel, and thus should go in either Web Original or Literature, respectively.

I don't actually have any Bumblebee icons, I just think the nickname is funny.

Where is the dividing line between ComicBook/ and Webcomic/? I'm asking because someone created the Webcomic.Injustice Year Zero page, which is a professionally produced and published comic book that was released digital-only through DC's normal digital distribution.

[up] I believe Webcomic/ is the correct namespace. Even though it may be a professionally-produced comic, it's still distributed solely through the Internet.

I think in such cases, they should go in ComicBook/, similar to what we do for shows/movies that are released through web services such as Netflix — they go in Series/, Film/, WesternAnimation/, etc. instead of WebVideo/ or WebAnimation/.

From Web Video:

As far as TV Tropes' Namespaces and Media Categories go, please note that to fall under WebVideo/, the work must have first been posted or be available primarily on the internet.

  • For big-budget series exclusive to streaming services such as Netflix, or television programs rebroadcast via video services or network websites, use the Series/ namespace or the appropriate animation namespace instead.

I should mention though DC is planning to release it physically later but since it was released digitally only first it would probably stay there.

[up] That may be your opinion but the rules are what matter.

The problem is that there is no rule, at least not in any easily searchable place. My argument is that this is closer to a Netflix situation than a normal webcomic situation.

I don't really see the need to make this an exception of sorts it is as simple as an online comic goes under that namespace. I also really need it to be kept as one since that is how I am keeping the Injustice franchise page.

By that logic, Netflix originals would be under WebVideo/

I also really need it to be kept as one since that is how I am keeping the Injustice franchise page.

That's not a good reason for it.

I have never been arguing that Netflix originals shouldn't go under Web Video it is web content so that would honestly make more sense. It's not a reason more of a personal thing.

On the same grounds, many of these DC online-first comics are planned for physical release as a trade paperback at some point.

It was still a digital exclusive release for a majority of its run, as I said no need to make a weird distinction since it is an online comic it should go under Webcomic.

It's a comic book released digitally first, but that doesn't make it a "webcomic" the way we usually define the term.
