The Mun, Returned

Just figured I should preface a few things here, just in case. I dunno how often players just kinda show up after vanishing into the ether and then post in here, so I figured I might want to clear up a few questions that might possibly arise.
One, I remember asking and being told I should not go through the Signup again, I think because there's already always a lot of new people doing that so it'd just clog them up further. Note, this might be me misremembering or having misunderstood (or both!), so if you guys think I should go in through the proper channels I am absolutely prepared to! Heck, that was what I myself proposed at first I think.
Two, maybe you are wondering why I vanished, or most likely, how do we know you won't vanish this time too? Well, first one's kind of a long story, but basically, over this time I think I've got a clearer picture of both the kind of character archetypes I like to play, the stories I like to tell, and a more solid writing style too. I hope it shows. If it doesn't, uh, well. I tried? But I can at least assure I won't vanish again. Joining this WAAPT thingie has been a recurring thought of mine, I just kept putting it on the backburner for many reasons.
Three, I am aware of the changes to the signup, technically. I am not sure what this means for me, honestly, if anything! So I'm just putting this in here as a question.
Finally, my timezone's the same as it's always been, I live in the faraway lands of Europe- and I live in UTC+1 specifically. That should be all, I think. (I am posting this at 1 AM before I go to sleep so do forgive me if I forget something or there are glaring mistakes; I will fix them tomorrow morning as I wake. Do let me know if I should instead post this in the signups and the rules have changed. I tried to find the chat I had used to ask questions, but it seemed unavailable, so I could not ask...)

The Trainer

     Trainer
  • Name: Andrea Caruso
    • Alias: MIRACLE🌠STAR
  • Age: 19
  • Gender: Genderfluid, Any pronouns
    • (Note: they will on most occasions use they/them, however they are fine with any pronouns).
  • Ethnicity: Italian (or the closest equivalent thereof)
  • Appearence:
Now, before I detail Andrea's appearence, I want to highlight something.
As MIRACLE🌠STAR, Andrea has worn a number of stage costumes. They enjoy making them themself, to some extent at least, and are not bad at it too. They're not a stylist or a designer or anything, and will need help with complex things, but sometimes they like to add a touch or two if inspiration strikes them. Furthermore, they have looked into the art of quick-change (that is, changing costumes very quickly while on stage), though they rarely use this in performances it is still a skill they developed because they thought it might make for an interesting routine. Now, onto what they wear when off the stage.
To be honest, Andrea's choice in clothing is both what you'd expect and quite practical. The shoes are heavy black boots, though quite fashionable ones. They wear jeans above them, dark blue in color, and above those is a shirt adorned at the neck with some kind of gemstone. You cannot tell whether it is real or not. Around their shoulders they also wear a jacket, a la cape. It looks quite good and also looks very dramatic should the wind blow. Their eyes are blue, their hair is straight, reaching halfway across their back, and purple in color. Is it natural? Who knows. Probably not, but who knows! They also have a small accessory, a black rose coming out of their hair. They say it looks really cool and do not accept criticism.
  • Region of Origin:
    • Born in Alto Mare
    • Moved and lived most of their life in Nimbasa City, Unova
  • Backstory:
Andrea is born in Alto Mare, the child of Manuele Caruso and Tiziana Fiammicello. Their memories of the town are few and overall good; their parents say they would always have the time of their life whenever they rode in a gondola, that they'd often try to jump and have a swim- thank goodness their parents always caught them in time!- and that once they found a very pretty gemstone washed up by the sea only to be disappointed enough when they were told it was just glass that they started crying.
When they were four, one event did take place- playing on the beach as they often did, they saw something... odd. A dark shape moving about, seemingly stuck in the sand. Andrea, curious, went to check it out, and lo and behold! It was a Pokèmon! Well, that was the second thing Andrea noticed- the first was how their mind suddenly had a voice speaking that was not their own. A childlike voice, a small, scared voice, asking a single question over and over- "Where... am I?"

Stunned for a few seconds, Andrea, in their very young mind, decided to reply (in their mind) that they were 'home'. They did not know what the voice was, and besides, that 'mon probably needed help, so they just gave the first answer that came to mind- saving this creature was more important. If they'd been in that situation they'd have needed help, so the pokemon did too, right? They shouted for their parents, and when they arrived, they helped dig the Sigilyph out of the sand, and carry it to the nearest Pokèmon Center.
Thankfully, the health of the volatile was not in danger; the nurse returning him confirmed that fairly quickly. But the circumstances were still somewhat unusual. That kind of 'mon- a Sigilyph- was not supposed to be there. In fact, while seeing any Pokèmon outside their natural habitat was odd, this was even more so: a species infamous for being guardians of ancient cities and routes, they should never veer from their paths.

But this one had. Why?

The answer was not entirely clear, even after some investigations. It was clear that, for whatever reason, this one Sigilyph did not have a path assigned to him, nor anything to protect. And so, while his brain was telling him to seek and guard something that did not exist, he had strayed far enough to fall into the sea, and wash ashore on that beach in Alto Mare.
That was, more or less, the story. Now, Andrea, still a young kid, piped in with the question they had been mulling over ever since the nurse had come back. That is to say-

"Can we keep it?"

It was, to them, a perfectly logical question. It looked super cool, and Andrea had wanted a Pokèmon (as every young kid would), and well, that was one! Honestly, no one really saw any issue with this. Their parents thought about it for a moment, but eventually gave the go-ahead. Andrea had their first 'mon! They decided to nickname him Odisseo; this was a suggestion from their father who would often be the one to tell them stories before they went to sleep, that of the greek hero being a favorite of his. Andrea would develop a love for mythology due to this.
Nothing much was to happen after that, not for a bit. The only thing of note was that, a year later, they moved to Unova, Nimbasa City. The reason was that their mom had found a job opportunity there that was simply too good to pass up. So to Nimbasa City they went!
It was there that Andrea would grow up, and besides some trips to Accumula Town to visit some lifelong friends of their parents, who they before then had only kept in touch with remotely, their life was led in Nimbasa City. It was during one of said trips that they caught their second 'mon, a Nidoran they named Pungiglione. Note that I do not know how to do that gender sign on TV Tropes formatting, so I will not be doing it. Don't worry, eventually he evolved into a Nidorino, so I don't have to write it out at all!

...But back on topic, one last event would be crucial in defining Andrea's path. Well, not event, not per se at least, moreso a series of things. Pokèmon battling is a hot topic everywhere, of course- it is probably the biggest form of competition and entertainment when it comes to these creatures- but even more so in Nimbasa City, home of both the Battle Institute and of the Gear Station. It would be the perfect place for any aspiring champion to test their mettle and hone their skills, but not for them.
They could not really explain it. They still had fun having battles against their friends, of course. But where their friends would try to go for an effective finishing move, or maybe some sure-kill strategy, Andrea would aim to find the cool, unusual, and unexpected solution. At first, losing would be frustrating, sure- but they soon realized that they didn't mind losing if they were able to pull off that super cool combination they really wanted to do, and that winning with a surefire strategy felt... boring, almost. Unfulfilling, to be sure.

Which is why, they quickly embarked on their own road, not to become a Champion, but to shine in the field of Pokèmon Contests!
Yes! Under the stage name of MIRACLE🌠STAR (it had always been their username everywhere a username was required, and they had grown too attached to it to think of anything else), with a melodramatic and very expressive stage presence, a new performer was born. With the goal of becoming the best entertainer they can be- in fact, with something of a perfectionist streak, or at least, much frustration should they notice they are not improving the way they'd want to- Andrea set off to glory.
And so began their road to the top. And as they went, they caught another 'mon, the first caught 'legitimately', so to speak, a Frillish nicknamed Sirena.
Their style also became more set in stone- a cool, sorta edgy, very melodramatic way of presenting their exhibitions: complete with flashy effects on every ball their 'mons are to come out of and chants to accompany them into action. Unfortunately for them, they have yet to make any major headway- they have entered in more than one competition, even scored pretty highly- but have yet to win themselves a Ribbon.

But tomorrow is a new day. Tomorrow will be special, yesterday was not. Tomorrow, for sure...!

The Mons:

     Mons

Odisseo, the Sigilyph

If you look up at the sky, you will see a solitary star. Ancient, miraculous comet! Incarnate in my greatest comrade, and fight with a mysterious power! Your eyes overlook the world's fate, your wings stir up the divine winds! Let's go! Odisseo!!

  • Species: Sigilyph

  • Nickname: Odisseo

  • Gender: Male

  • Ability: Magic Guard
  • Bio:
[Described in character's bio]

  • Personality
Odisseo is more or less the quiet one, the guy who can be relied upon to be the voice of reason and de-escalate situations. He is quite mellow all things considered, and only Andrea is able to really fire him up on stage- or maybe instead of 'fire him up', the right word would be 'convince him to go with the flow'. Odisseo is, after all, kind of a worrywart. Perhaps it is his nature as a 'guardian' that leads him to worry so much?
On that note, he still does think about that. He still cannot remember what it was that led him to stray from his path, nor what that path even was to begin with. He often wonders if there was anything more to it, or if he might be just overthinking it.

Pungiglione, the Nidorino

A shining sword piercing through fate! The wild beast rampaging through the great plains, now stand by my side as my knight! I call upon you, Pungiglione!

  • Species: Nidorino

  • Nickname: Pungiglione

  • Gender: Male

  • Ability: Hustle

  • Bio:. The story of how he was captured is as simple as it is a clear display of his personality.
While on a trip to Accumula Town to visit some family friends, Andrea was out in a field practicing some moves with their Sigilyph.
They were not yet actually participating in contests, but they were having fun by pretending to be. Attracted by some of the combinations Andrea thought up, which were admittedly quite eye-pleasing, a Nidoran approached. He just wanted to play around at first, but he ended up coming back every day the trainer and 'mon were there on vacation- Andrea did not mind, nor did Odisseo, of course. Soon enough, Andrea was thinking of ways to incorporate him into their routines, and from there it was only a matter of time before he accepted to follow them as their Pokèmon and albeit begrudgingly let himself be captured. With time, as the trio grew up more or less together, he evolved into a Nidorino. By the way, did you know his name is actually a Lord of the Rings reference? Bilbo's sword in The Hobbit has the italian name of 'Pungiglione'. Just a fun fact for you.

  • Personality:
His personality, as reflected by his Hustle ability, is quite enthusiastic and playful. He is the embodiment of energetic, in quite the contrast to the more melodramatic emphasis of his trainer. He will find it hard to stand still even for a moment, and will jump at anything he finds interesting no matter what. Truly, he has way too much energy. Enough so in fact that he has a 50/50 chance to ruin any given Contest for Andrea by virtue of not sticking with a rehearsed routine because his partner's move was so sparkly and cool and he just has to jump around in whatever it created because it's so fun! Even so, Andrea loves him dearly and he also has a strong attachment to them. He seems to have a mischievous side to him too, as Odisseo could swear sometimes he messes up on purpose because it's gonna look funny. Still, the two basically grew up together, so they treat each other like siblings. Pungiglione being the more excitable and active one, and Odisseo the more reserved and calm one.

Sirena, the Frillish

Now, within my heart, an alluring song echoes! Close your eyes, and hearken. Once you've heard it, it's already too late! Maiden of the deep sea, with your sweet voice invite your foes to their demise! It's your turn, Sirena!

  • Species: Frillish

  • Nickname: Sirena

  • Gender: Female

  • 'Ability: Water Absorb

  • Personality:
Out of Andrea's roster, this one is the most battle-happy and competitive one. She will always be seeking out a challenge, trying to find a way to be put to the test and overcome it. It's not fun if it isn't hard, is her motto- or would be if she could speak human, at any rate. The hard is what makes it great. Out of the three she is probably the most honor-bound one, too, though notably this does not apply to actual battles. If she gives her word, she will keep to it, come what may; but if she is fighting you she will pull every trick and exploit every opportunity to win- and expect you to do the same. Why? Simple, because if you're not going all out, what's the point? If you gotta do something, you gotta do it well. This makes her the most reliable one in situations where Andrea wants to try a risky strategy, or a move that they're not confident will work out, because she will always rise up to the challenge... though not always actually make it. But she'll be proud to have tried nonetheless.
If you were wondering, her name just means 'siren'.
  • Bio:
The first Pokemon our trainer actually captured', funnily enough. A bit irritated (read: pissed) that they were not making as much progress as they would have liked, they thought maybe they needed to expand their options a bit- and thus went out again, seeking the element they hoped would complete their team. In the route marked as 4, this Frillish had sensed a trainer and come out of the water seeking a challenge- and a challenge she got. Andrea saw her fierceness and eagerness, and concluded it would be a good fit. Or maybe they just felt like it was fate for them to capture her, as after all she had come to them on her own and given quite the good challenge. As for her, she is content with this. She was beaten, fair and square, and she respects Andrea's spirit in self improvement. Oh also she is somehow really good at fighting games too where she will always beat everyone else on the team. Including the psychic-type pokemon playing literally with his mind who can input frame perfect reactions just by thinking about it. Somehow.

I might be asking for participants for a plot thing later on, like much later. Not a big thing, probably just a few people. I'm not taking any right now, though, just giving a heads up.

Essays have been read, again. I had read them in the past and as I was writing my signup, to check some stuff- and generally they're just rules of thumb for R Ping, as far as I can tell. But yeah, read them I did. As for the 25 pages of past RP, oh boy. That'll take a while and a half. I got through 5 and it took me what, 20 minutes? If only to try and actually understand what was going on, and even then. Some dude did get art of them being stabbed in the stomach but anime anime friendship anime magic anime and now they're alive again and have a magic sword. Which was admittedly pretty cool to read.

Ok well yeah that's about it, Dark out

Hey, so, now that the PLA spoiler block is lifted, there's a lot of lore that we should probably process, huh? A lot of it can probably be figured out on a need-to-know basis, but there is one major thing to figure out:

What happened to Hisuian forms and evos?

Personally, my preference to answer that wouldn't be "they were driven to extinction". At least, not to totality. Environmental factors have changed dramatically in the centuries between Hisui and Sinnoh due to urbanization, but there are still remote areas and Mystery Zones that dwindling populations of these Pokemon could have retreated to in order to keep away from humans. It'd make sense that they could be considered protected species, creating an in-universe barrier for the average trainer encountering and capturing them without necessarily preventing us from writing them onto our characters' teams if we so desire.

As for Pokemon like Wyrdeer and Ursaluna, which evolve from Pokemon already well established to exist, their evo methods are already Byzantine enough that it wouldn't be unreasonable to assume that it's just... forgotten knowledge, except in rare circles.

But! Those are just my thoughts.

I've got a bit of a preference for "the Hisuian forms Did go extinct but time/multiversal shenanigans reintroduced them to the present day" but I do agree there should be a way for people to add them to their teams so I'm down for preserves or them being bred in captivity or stuff. I'm admittedly curious how Scarlet and Violet is gonna address it, if at all, but it's not exactly tenable to wait til the end of the year to get an answer to that question

I like the idea of protected population preserves. Though I'd figure at least one or two with certain conditions for coming about would probably have died out totally. Hisuian Zoro for instance is caused by intense cruelty and mistrust as well as dying in the cold, at least that's what the Pokedex says. Presumably certain forms wouldn't exist anymore because of conditions changing.

Byzantine methods of evo also work as to why we haven't seen it in a long time.

...I did not consider the timespace shenanigans but I do absolutely love that idea, especially after the multiverse was ripped open for two years. And I mean, Pokemon jumping from different time periods in timespace distortions is already explicitly canon, so :P

Maybe up until the Mobius arc, they were protected/extinct, but then things went Weird and now there's like, legit discourse on whether they still need to be protected ("wait are these creatures invasive species now????? in their own home region???")

This is kind of relevant for a post I've had in reserve so I might as well chime in.

I propose a hybrid solution that's depending on the species, just to maximize the plot fuel. We have 4 or 5 categories:

1.) Evolutions, whose means of evolving have been lost and could be rediscovered as a plot point.

2.) Completely extinct taxa, which means they can only be brought back the same way Gale and Theodora brought back Silphium (by time travel shenanigans) or by cloning.

3.) Critically endangered taxa which cannot be caught at all or can only be caught by special permit a la indigenous nincadas in Unova. Since we have the Hunter's Guild as a villain group, we have the "protecting endangered taxa from being poached" plot to explore.

4.) Lazarus taxa, which are thought to be extinct, but aren't. A J-Teamer stumbles upon them and must work with PEFE to have them protected... all while developers, collectors, or poachers try to hunt them.

5.) Regular taxa, which can still be caught as any other 'mon, possibly thanks to successful conservation efforts.

I understand that cutting the Gordian knot this way is not exactly an easy solution as we'd need to discuss which species becomes which. But I made this consideration based on how many plot ideas we can form from the new species, which can help spice up the game for individual players.

Based on what I've seen of Generation 9, we can speculate that the Hisuian Zoroark line still lives, which supports some species falling in category number 5 (handwaveable as a species that still exists and can be caught).

JG: While that does create a lot of plot opportunities, it creates the problem of necessitating such plots and all the complicated discussion that goes with them before they're even allowed to show up. They may appeal to some people, but others shouldn't have to go through hoops like that just to explain why their funny explodey Pokeball creature is made of wood instead of metal, without contradicting the reasons why other people's funny explodey Pokeball creatures are made of wood instead of metal.

Understood. In retrospect deciding which species to incorporate into which plot would be too complicated to keep track of. I then move to endorse the original idea (most/all of them are Lazarus taxa).

This way, it actually allows some people at certain times to believe them to be extinct/just cryptids due to the difficulty of actually finding them. The one "overarching" plot could be their rediscovery, and each player can just "rediscover" a species on their own independently before PEFE comes in and "confirms" it, then build up from there.

Hisuian Forms

I feel like the best thing for most would be initially they've indeed been marginalized to the most remote corners of Sinnoh and/or within the Grand Underground (Where you can indeed put starters in balls) outside of dedicated breeding programs (So a good portion of people might think they're straight up extinct, but the increase in rifts (Whether that's an Entralink Arc leftover or some other reason) has caused their numbers to increase.

(Far less of a pain in the ass than having them actually go extinct and we make a whole plot about that and then it turns out they're not and we need to scramble to figure something out)

Kleavor: Industrialization meant it's harder to get the Black Augurite needed for a Scyther to evolve.

Ursaluna: Ditto with the Peat Blocks plus the more esoteric details of its evolution revolving around the full moon.

Hisuian Growlithe: I suspect that with Sinnoh's increased industrialization they might've gotten mostly bred out by the Kantonian Growlithe save for said breeding programs and relict populations.

Hisuian Braviary:' Technically they're not from Sinnoh/Hisui (In a sort of parallel to how Stellar's sea eagles, which they're based on in contrast to Unovan Braviary's bald and white-tailed eagles, come down to Hokkaido from Sakhalin and the Amur River basin during the winter), and come from further north, so I figure they're a mon you could occasionally run into on the path to the Cathedral.

NEW TRAINER INCOMING

Introducing...

Name: Laurie Hitoki

Age: 21

Gender: Non-binary

Sexuality: Pan

Ethnicity: White, Sinnoh-Kalosian

Region of Origin: Sinnoh, specifically Eterna City

Appearance: This.

Hasslemon handle: None as of yet, as they do not have Hasslemon due to not being a Pokemon, but when they do get it, it will be sapphiricLoner (SL).

Regular chat handle: solehitoki1999

Biography: Laurie Hitoki was born in Eterna City on the first second of the year 1999. Their mother was born and raised in Kalos and had worked as a museum curator; their father was born and raised in Sinnoh and had worked in the Underground. From the very beginning, even before their soon-to-be born sibling disappeared, Laurie was mostly quiet, reserved, and intelligent. They would spend most of their time in their room alone reading books and studying for classes at the Trainer's school- and listening to music. Specifically, heavy metal and rock music, along with Celtic rock. They did extremely well in their classes, and leaned into the heritages of both of their parents by learning to speak both French and Japanese (the former semi-fluently). About 10 years later, their younger sibling, Cole, was born, and Laurie received their first Pokemon from their father- a kindhearted, optimistic, and extremely persistent and determined Sandshrew with a love of rock, metal, and country music. At first, Laurie didn't enjoy being around said Sandshrew- they didn't even give him a name- due to the fact that they, at the time, thought country music was the worst thing to come out of music. They tolerated the Sandshrew at best, and got along much better with their younger sibling Cole, who they would play with, protect, and teach.

Laurie's attitude towards their Sandshrew began to change when they turned 11 years old and they, Cole, and their parents traveled to the Unova region. They vacationed in Driftveil City, and one night the Sandshrew snuck Laurie out of their hotel room in order to give them a taste of his favorite place in the world- the Grand Ole Operetta, known more simply as the GOOprix and even more simply as the GO2- AKA the biggest hub for country music in the entire Pokemon world. Laurie was not amused, and at first refused to listen to any of what they assumed was mere drivel coming their way. They booed all of the GO2 acts and then proceeded to make immediate haste and run right back to their hotel. The Sandshrew begged them to listen to him, but Laurie did not speak Monese and assumed that the Sandshrew was just doing it to annoy them. When they got back to their Driftveil hotel, Laurie opened up their Pinwheel Prime account- and as fate would have it, the first thing they saw was a country music documentary. Despite their annoyance, they did find themselves intrigued, and begrudgingly clicked on the documentary.

They got so interested they watched the whole thing- all eight parts- three times, and eventually came to realize that there was a link between country, rock, and metal that they hadn't even considered before. They began to look up the biggest names in country and soon grew to appreciate the genre and the big names within it. While it didn't end up beating their love of rock and metal, country grew to become their third favorite genre, and the next day, they announced to their Sandshrew that they would finally be giving him a name- D'Autry. D'Autry was overjoyed beyond belief, and over the course of the next few days, they grew to learn more about each other. Laurie learned that D'Autry was actually as big of a fan of rock and metal as they were- he liked it more than country, actually- that his favorite band was Flogging Molly, and that his main goal in life was to get at least one rock or metal band onto the GOOprix and not have them get booed like the Byrds were. D'Autry, meanwhile, learned that Laurie spoke French and Japanese, but couldn't speak Monese, and offered to be their teacher. Laurie immediately agreed, and since then, Laurie and D'Autry have been the best of friends, even if Laurie still isn't fully fluent in the Monese language.

Eventually, Laurie graduated from high school as a valedictorian, and while they were planning on going to college, they decided against it in order to continue to support their family and particularly their sibling Cole, who they had had a great relationship with for their whole life. They would play games together, study together, and listen to music together, and while Laurie could be a bit overprotective of Cole, they loved each other very much. Eventually, however, Cole turned 10, meaning it was time for them to select their first Pokemon. Within that time, D'Autry had evolved into a Sandslash, and Laurie had developed a love of Pokemon history and wanted to go back in time to see what old Pokemon looked like. They invited Cole- and their parents- to come and see their work in action, and they were all interested in what he had made. All of them were surprised, shocked, and excited when it turned out that Laurie had made a working portal to... somewhere in the past. Cole, however, got a little too excited, and proceeded to rush towards the portal. Laurie desperately tried to get them to stop, as did Laurie's parents, but Cole was so excited to see the past that they jumped into the portal without a second thought. Terrified and desperate, Laurie began to fiddle with the controls, desperate to get their sibling back, but ended up accidentally destroying the portal a la Lee House- trapping their sibling in the past.

Laurie was so horrified and guilt-ridden by this that they became a hikikomori for the next year. They refused to come out of their room except to eat, they barely listened to music anymore, and spent days trying to fix their portal in order to get their sibling back. Nothing worked, and Laurie and their parents began to suspect and assume the worst- that Cole Hitoki was dead, never to return. Laurie immediately began doing research, and found out that Sinnoh had previously been called Hisui, a place filled with Pokemon that were extremely threatening and dangerous. Realizing that Cole was not yet a Trainer with Pokemon, they immediately assumed that Cole must have been killed, and after they broke the "news", they and their parents mourned for days. It took a year of recluse for Laurie to finally accept the fact that their sibling was supposedly dead, and they set out on their Pokemon journey at the age of 21. In that time, they caught a timid, shy, and kindhearted Aron, an energetic and fun-loving Magnemite (who reminded them a lot of Cole), a stoic and serious Beldum, a snarky yet good-natured Houndoom, and a modest, good-natured, yet very-much-prepared-for-his-death Medicham. They named them after each of their favorite bands or members of them: Draiman, MC-DC, Hetfield, Slipknot, and Zoltan, and during the battle against that last one, Draiman evolved into a Lairon. They all were introduced to D'Autry, who was delighted to introduce them to country music and the GO2, and much to Laurie's relief, they found that they could understand 3 of their new friends- Hetfield and Zoltan via telepathy, and MC-DC via radio signals that were converted into words. Zoltan became Laurie's main translator as a result.

Soon after Zoltan was caught, though, MC-DC began picking up on strange signals- signals that suggested that Hisuian Pokemon were making their way back into the region. More importantly, however, those signals suggested that Cole was not only very much alive, but had a full team of six Pokemon in Hisui and was desperately trying to get back to their sibling as well. Delighted, Laurie decided to immediately get back to work on tracking down Cole and possibly running into more Hisuian Pokemon, but despite this new glimmer of hope, their guilt about losing their sibling all those years ago still remains. Currently, Laurie is traveling around the Sinnoh region, trying to find out everything they can about Hisui, its Pokemon, and the Monese language- and looking to find their sibling once again.

Character theme: "Wrong Side of Heaven"- Five Finger Death Punch (EN); "Raison D'Etre"- Eve (JP)

Laurie's Pokemon

Species: Sandslash

  • Nickname: D'Autry
  • Nickname origin: From the band Daughtry (and their lead singer Chris Daughtry by proxy), as well as the "singing cowboy" Gene Autry
  • Gender: Male
  • Ability: Sand Veil
  • Nature: Naive
  • Hasslemon handle: celticCatalyst (CC)
  • Personality: On the outside, D'Autry looks like someone who'd probably beat you up in a heartbeat. He's a Sandslash, for one thing, which means he has massive spikes on his back; he wears a cowboy hat; he listens to rock and metal music, etc. In actuality, D'Autry is a sweet, kindhearted, optimistic Sandslash who is very supportive of his friends' and Trainer's endeavors. He is a massive fanboy of country and metal music, and knows a ton about the history of both as well as the influences that certain genres have had on others. He can be a bit naive, however— he is so desperate to have rock and metal music performed on the GO2 note  that he has sent out thousands of letters begging them to have Flogging Molly— a non-country band— become members, despite what happened the last time a non-country band performed at the GO2 note . This, naturally, has elicited the frustration of both Hetfield and the GO2 itself, but D'Autry remains persistent due to patterns of said bands being Vindicated by History— a trait that he has carried over into his battle strategy. D'Autry is, naturally, extremely protective of his Trainer, and as the only mon on the team who knew Cole before their disappearance, he is the most eager to find and reunite with them. Despite being named after Daughtry, his favorite band is the aforementioned Flogging Molly, who he will be happy to defend with his life— though he does like Daughtry too.
  • Moveset: Crush Claw, Agility, Defense Curl, Poison Sting, Sand Attack, Rollout, Fury Cutter, Rapid Spin, Bulldoze, Swift, Fury Swipes, Sand Tomb, Slash, Dig, Gyro Ball, Night Slash
  • Character themes: "Long Live Rock and Roll"- Daughtry (artist-matched); "The Times They Are a-Changing"- Flogging Molly (cover; non artist-matched); "StaRt"- Mrs. GREEN APPLE (JP)

Species: Lairon

  • Nickname: Draiman
  • Nickname origin: From David Draiman, lead singer of the heavy metal band Disturbed
  • Gender: Male
  • Ability: Sturdy
  • Nature: Gentle
  • Hasslemon handle: tectonicTimidity (TT)
  • Personality: The second mon that Laurie captured, as well as the first in the wake of their sibling's disappearance, Draiman, despite all appearances to the contrary, is very much akin to his namesake. He is a Gentle Giant of a Pokemon, and is a lot more timid than his appearance would have you believe. However, unlike mons such as Freddie or Teryx, he isn't a panphobe, and is more shy than he is frantic and panicky. He is always willing to help out his friends and feels immense regret if he accidentally hurts one of them- which is actually more common than you might believe. If he's not timid, though, he's decidedly among the most optimistic of the first 6 save for D'Autry and MC-DC. He specifically gets along well with D'Autry, and is supportive of his endeavors to put Flogging Molly on the GO2- though compared to D'Autry's naivete he is more of a voice of reason than anything else. He is immensely protective of his Trainer, much like D'Autry is, and is willing to defend them whenever they are hurt or if anyone tries to remind them that their sibling is (supposedly) dead. Even so, though, he won't actually hurt anyone directly (enemies included) unless it's an absolute last resort or if he feels as though the opponent truly deserves it. His favorite band, naturally, is Disturbed, but he's more of a fan of their softer songs such as "The Light" and "Darkness" than anything else— even if he will listen to a harder song like "Stricken" from time to time.
  • Moveset: Metal Claw, Rock Tomb, Roar, Headbutt, Protect, Rock Slide, Iron Head
  • Character themes: "A Reason to Fight"- Disturbed (artist-matched); "Wallflower"- Priscilla Ahn (non artist-matched); "Yume-iro Parade!"- Rhodanthe* (JP)

Species: Magnemite

  • Nickname: MC-DC
  • Nickname origin: From AC/DC and "MC", as in a radio emcee, befitting their personality
  • Gender: Genderless, identifies as non-binary
  • Ability: Magnet Pull
  • Nature: Jolly
  • Hasslemon handle: telecastMaster (TM)
  • Personality: MC-DC, also known as simply "MC" or "Emcee", is perhaps the most jovial, exciteable, and happy-go-lucky of all of Laurie's mons next to only D'Autry. While they sometimes have a bit of an ego— as indicated by their Hasslemon handle— it's in a fashion very similarly to that of Papyrus. In fact, MC might as well be the lovable skeleton with just a bit of Mettaton attached. They are eager to please, extremely optimistic, and are probably the most kindhearted member of the team besides Draiman, since they will immediately return themselves back to their PokeBall when the opponent's HP gets low. They love to see other people happy more than anything else in the world, especially their Trainer, and as such have trained themselves to pick up on signals as far away as Kanto in case Cole is out there somewhere. Of course, the main signals that they pick up on are radio waves, and they convert those into sound waves that they can accurately speak with. Sometimes the original radio broadcasts get through, but if not for their ability to convert radio waves to speech, all Laurie would be able to hear would be beeps and boops. Their ~voice~ comes out akin to a radio announcer from the 1930's as a result of this, complete with static noises. They absolutely adore listening to music through the radio and desire for it to make a comeback, and also enjoy mashing up sampled songs with their originals. Their favorite band, naturally (but also somewhat surprisingly), is AC/DC, with Queen and Rush tied for second place (fittingly, since both of them have written songs about radio supremacy).
  • Moveset: Supersonic, Thunder Wave, Electro Ball, Gyro Ball, Spark
  • Character themes: "Shot in the Dark"- AC/DC (artist-matched); "Radio Ga Ga"- Queen (non artist-matched); "Shake & Shake"- sumika (JP)

Species: Beldum

  • Nickname: Hetfield
  • Nickname origin: From James Hetfield, lead singer of Metallica
  • Gender: Genderless, identifies as male
  • Ability: Clear Body
  • Nature: Serious
  • Hasslemon handle: thundersManager (TM)
  • Personality: Hetfield, as indicated by his Hasslemon handle having the same abbreviation as that of MC-DC's, serves as MC-DC's foil and the only sane mon of the group. In comparison to the exuberant and fun-loving Emcee, Hetfield is stoic, serious, and a bit of a perfectionist. He is the most likely to point out the flaws of a situation, but never strays too far from his stoic behavior— which makes sense, since he literally sounds like a robot. As such, he can't really emote that much— but he is a very effective Deadpan Snarker. He is almost constantly annoyed by Emcee's antics, and is constantly working to rein in their slight ego whenever it comes out. The few times he isn't annoyed by Emcee's antics, though, it can be a bit heartwarming to watch— even if Hetfield believes he isn't really capable of emotions such as happiness, sadness and the like. He is— it's just that his voice never betrays it since it's so RO-BO-TIC. Hetfield's favorite band of all time is Metallica, followed by Daft Punk (since robots).
  • Moveset: Tackle, Iron Defense, Zen Headbutt, Iron Head
  • Character themes: "Through the Never"- Metallica (artist-matched); "Technologic"- Daft Punk (non artist-matched); "Goya no Machiawase"- Hello Sleepwalkers (JP)

Species: Houndour

  • Nickname: Slipknot
  • Nickname origin: From the band Slipknot
  • Gender: Male
  • Ability: Flash Fire
  • Nature: Docile
  • Hasslemon handle: sulfuricSympathy (SS)
  • Personality: Slipknot, at first glance, seems like someone who you wouldn't want to mess with in the slightest. He's a Dark-type; his favorite move is Payback, and he is, on the surface, a bit stubborn and slightly quick-tempered. While all that is true, and while Slipknot is the snarkiest and wittiest member of the first 6 members of the team, as well as technically the biggest jerk of the team overall, there's a reason his nature is Docile and not Sassy or Adamant. Most of the time, Slipknot is actually a pretty chill and good-natured Pokemon. He is immensely loyal to the rest of the team, and is more patient than he would initially let on, especially towards the more emotional members of the team such as Emcee and Draiman. He is very much fond of cute and cuddly things— as a matter of fact, he refers to them as his kryptonite— and is willing to participate in the others' antics from time to time. Be warned if you happen to hurt any of his friends, though, as he will make you regret it in an instant. His favorite band, naturally, is the one he was named after.
  • Moveset: Ember, Smog, Howl, Roar, Bite, Taunt, Payback
  • Character themes: "Before I Forget"- Slipknot (artist-matched); "When We Stand Together"- Nickelback (non artist-matched); Probably a Psychic Lover song (JP)

Species: Medicham

  • Nickname: Zoltan
  • Nickname origin: From Zoltan Bathory, lead singer of Five Finger Death Punch, as well as the Zoltan hand gesture
  • Gender: Male
  • Ability: Pure Power
  • Nature: Mild
  • Hasslemon handle: fivefingeredFormality (FF)
  • Personality: As the only member of the team to be caught in his final form, Zoltan is arguably the most mature and level-headed member of Laurie's first 6 mons. He is extremely hyper-aware of his two typings- as a Psychic-type, he has an extremely long lifespan; as a Fighting-type, he is aware that when he does die, there'll be no coming back for him. He is so hyper-prepared for his death that he has already written his own will- but Zoltan is the exact opposite of suicidal. Instead, he wants to live his life to the absolute fullest, and is a kindhearted individual who will protect those he cares about. He mainly serves as the voice of reason for the rest of the group (including Hetfield, whose perfectionism he tries to rein in as best he can) and is extremely knowledgeable about a lot of things. Notably, he is the only other member of the team with Egg Moves- the first one is D'Autry- and will teach new moves to the rest of the team if they want to learn them. He is Laurie's main translator, since Laurie still doesn't know that much Monese, but will often be accompanied by Hetfield and MC-DC. Of course, he is still prone to general bouts of silliness and loves Five Finger Death Punch, but is exceedingly formal with those he cares about (hence his Hasslemon handle of fivefingeredFormality (FF)). He also has a bit of a superstition surrounding the number 5, believing it to be good luck, and oftentimes will do or say things in fives, such as having 5 Egg Moves.
  • Moveset: Confusion, Detect, Fire Punch, Ice Punch, Thunder Punch, Zen Headbutt, Endure, Feint, Force Palm, Psybeam, Calm Mind, Mind Reader, High Jump Kick, Psych Up, Acupressure, Power Trick, Reversal, Bullet Punch, Dynamic Punch
  • Character themes: "Brighter Side of Gray"- Five Finger Death Punch (artist-matched); "Hold on to Memories"- Disturbed (non artist-matched); "Silhouette"- KANA-BOON (JP)
