Honestly, there's only way the Ice Age series should end:

Manny and Ellie get separated from their baby, and the gang go on a madcap search to track her. Meanwhile, a neolithic young man finds a lost baby mammoth, and, remembering something from his youth, goes on a quest to return it to it's parents.

Ice Age seems to have the same formula as Shrek, namely

One great.

Two good.

Three unspeakably horrible.

Four unwatched.

[up] In your opinion, I thought Ice Age 3 was great.

The original was actually very enjoyable and witty. I thought the second one exchanged good storytelling and characters in favor of easy jokes and situations. The third one was weak and definitely way below the first, but I liked it a bit better than the second.

Now this trailer...I can feel much more energy and creativity present here than either in the second or third movie. As @truteal said, it's got an Avery-ish vibe to it, and when has that ever been a bad thing? Hopefully this will escape the horrible claws of Sequelitis...

Wow, I bet that might be considered huge Paranoia Fuel toward folks with a justified Nostalgia Filter, especially after coming across this essay on Newgrounds, so I guess a possible reason on why people as young as their teens and twenties are extremely nostalgic is because they believe that animated films from the distant past are more educational and informative for children on survival skills.

@Known Unknown yes, that'd be awesome if they found some way to bring back the baby, whose name is Roshan, like that. I have been longing for him to return for the past two movies! And there is a bit of hope that the movie might escape the claws of Sequelitis (and the dreaded Jumping the Shark, though YMMV there, some fans think the shark jumped at Dawn of the Dinosaurs. I'm one of the ones who think it didn't.), the synopsis has been released by Fox at last - and the continental drift separates the members of the herd, leaving the Original Sub-Zero Heroes stranded together, while Ellie, Peaches, and her "brothers" are trapped elsewhere, while Scrat has his usual escapades with his elusive nut.

Here's the official synopsis from Fox:

''One of filmdom's most beloved trios - "Ice Age's" Manny, Diego, and Sid - embark upon their greatest adventure after cataclysm sets an entire continent adrift. Separated from the rest of the herd, they use an iceberg as a makeshift ship, which launches them on an epic seafaring quest. Manny and the gang are challenged like never before to become heroes and do the impossible, as they encounter exotic sea creatures, explore a brave new world, and battle ruthless pirates. And Scrat's reunion with his cursed nut catapults him to places no prehistoric squirrel has gone before.''

So... hopefully this plot will revive the elements that made the Original so great - I'm really hoping for that. (And for Roshan to return finally. It's about time they give us that Continuity Nod with him.grin) Also, in case anyone doesn't know this, but the short feels Avery-esque because Scrat and his trails with the acorn are based after the famous Wile E Coyote And The Road Runner shorts directed by Tex Avery and Chuck Jones, which the filmmakers drew a lot of inspiration from for Scrat. This is confirmed on the commentary for the Original Ice Age.

I loved all three movies, and I'm going to see this too. But IMO they should have stuck with a trilogy.

I loved the original, liked the second less than the first, but still found it enjoyable, and I didn't bother with the third. I have low expectations with this one. I felt the third was edging into Sequelitis territory and this just seems un-necessary.

I'd say the third was better than the second, but neither was as good as the first.

[up] Ditto here. I thought the first one was good but not great, the second was mostly unlikable, the third one was the most enjoyable but not as technically good as the first one.

I also think Ice Age 3 was much better than Shrek 3. But then again, what isn't?

The third movie had a Forced Memetic Badass that just made me wince every time he came onscreen because he was so obvious of a money-making-scheme with no real substantial character. And, though there were always playful inaccuracies, only in the third movie did the science hit Flintstones-levels. There had always been references, but only in the third movie did it feel genuinely painful. All of the annoying and unnecessary characters from the second movie were even more annoying because they were treated as part of the main cast when I clearly remembered that they weren't, and to top it all off, the film had multiple instances of Getting Crap Past the Radar that made me want to actually turn into a Moral Guardian despite my hatred for them.

I'm feeling strangely happy now, contented and serene. Oh don't you see, finally I'll be, somewhere that's green...

He seemed like a parody to me, actually.

The real money-gimmick in 3 was DINOSAURS!!!!!!

I loved the original, liked the second one, and loved the third one. This one...does not sound very promising...

It sounds an awful lot like Voyage of the Dawn Treader, which just sounded plain boring to me. I don't know, I'll need to see the trailer before I truly decide, but these characters just might jump over a shark while they're on that iceberg.

On Cartoon Brew, this short was posted and the only thing EVERYONE. EVERYONE! Would say is how they wish they wouldn't make another sequel, instead of the short itself.

Anyway, all the Scrat shorts were extremely Tex Avery.

I heard a synopsis a long time ago about Ice Age 4: the heroes, as well as Manny's child Peach, get frozen and are thawed in a museum in THE PRESENT DAY. That's right. They will GET INTO INSANE SITUATIONS DEALING WITH AN ORDINARY SETTING. Wow. That sounds really bad. At least it means we'll see humans again. Those humans kind of disappeared after the first movie.

Speaking of the first movie, it was indeed the best of the trilogy for a number of reasons. There were less prominent characters, so the whole thing had a darker, more lonely tone about it. The small cast allowed for more interaction, drama, and name-calling. ESPECIALLY the incessant name-calling. It was the only one to feature humans, abite non-speaking ones. There was no Anachronism Stew , or, nothing as big as in the second or third film! And the story was more straight-forward.

In my opinion Shrek 2 is leagues better than Shrek, but hey.

And, I didn't want another Ice Age, but that promo sold me. I'm so glad they're going all-out with the Tex Avery shenanigans.

If anyone is still watching this topic, the official trailer released today on Itunes.

So far it looks promising, if at least because of how the stakes have been raised from the two previous sequels and this one looks like it will be the adventure of a lifetime.

And I still hold out hope that this film will reintroduce Roshan, the baby the Sub-Zero Heroes saved in the original film, back into the series again.

What's good about the trailer is that we're likely to be journeying along with Manny, Diego and Sid entirely again as they try to make their way home to Ellie and Peaches. Still not sure about how I feel about the Love Interest for Diego and Sid as usual (how unexpected) takes all the attention and getting crap past the radar lines for himself in the trailer, but I will give it the benefit of the doubt until it actually releases and hope that Blue Sky won't disappoint.

The first one was fantastic. It never should have become a franchise. While inoffensive enough, 2 was nothing to write home about, and I didn't bother with 3.

The equation:

It was the first CG animated film of a major corporate entertainment company + first successes are built onto it as a trend grows = sequels to said film

Such is why I hate hate hate Hollywood

IMO:

1 was good, 2 was good as well, maybe even sligtlhy better than 1, 3 was good, a bit worse than the other two but still likeable.

I am ok with a 4, I never will understand complainers. If you dont like sequels then just dont watch it.....

Bad sequels taint the originals by association. I know that my gut reaction to the first Ice Age is a lot worse than it was before I saw the second and third films.

At first I didn't realize I needed all this stuff...
