YMMV / Touhou Fan Music

Go To

General/Multiple circles

  • Award Snub: For years, the "Top X Best Touhou Remixes" charts have always placed "Bad Apple!! featuring Nomico" by Alstroemeria Records at the #1 spot, which has riled up some fans who think that other circles are more deserving of that spot. While "Bad Apple!!" has always been considered one of the most influential remixes of all time (since it helped put the spotlight on the Touhou doujin music scene and the series in general), the constant praise it gets, as well as it frequently topping the charts, has caused some fans to be more vocal about its overexposure, to the point that people now expect "Bad Apple!!" to be placed at #1 no matter how popular or successful a newer circle becomes by the year. Since its first release in 2007, many detractors are upset that "Bad Apple!!" is robbing other circles of their long overdue spotlight on the charts.
  • Broken Base: YouTubers who upload Touhou fan music, usually without the permission of the circles, are fairly contentious in the Touhou fan music community. Debates tend to flare up when a circle copyright strikes the videos of such a channel and gets it shut down: Detractors argue that the circle is just asserting its right to control the distribution of its music. Defenders argue that these channels are good because they can introduce new fans to the circles (and those who listen to their music on YouTube without buying albums probably wouldn't have bought them anyway). Complicating the issue is when a channel offers to take down videos at the circles' request, but the circle goes straight to copyright striking anyway. Defenders will point out that the channel getting deleted is a pain for everyone who put its videos in their playlists, so the circle should've requested a takedown instead. Detractors argue that the channel had it coming, and should've asked for permission before uploading the music.

Akatsuki Records

  • Just Here for Godzilla: A good majority of Touhou fans only listen to Akatsuki Records because of the lead vocalist Stack, whose raspy vocals contrast heavily against the "generic Japanese Idol Singer voice" stereotype that fans love her because of it, adding an extra punch to her songs and contributing to the circle's Cult Classic status.

Chocofan

  • Dancing Bear: A few of their Touhou arrangements, such as "LUCKY CAT", are primarily known for being released mere days after the theme they're based on.

COOL&CREATE

Pizuya's Cell

  • Narm: The song "Awaking Bugs that Cold Dislike" apparently tries to be a badass rock/metal song, but its Gratuitous English lyrics are too ridiculous for their own good:
    • The first line is "I have many bugs inside", and the protagonist mentions that she's turning into worm and informs us that she will squirm in the chorus. To make the Narm worse, we're left interpreting it literally because nothing in the song makes it clear that this is merely an odd metaphor.
    • The line "Bugs make me a mad" is repeated several times throughout the song. Yes, it's "me a mad", as if Mario was saying it.
    • "Sun will be far/Break hum of freaking insects right now" is just incomprehensible.
    • The lines "Every muggy night I lose the fight" and "Break hum of freaking insects right now" sound like they were supposed to contain the words "bloody" and "fucking", but the former was hastily replaced with a similar non-swear and the latter got the Gosh Dang It to Heck! treatment.
    • "In the deep red bleedy eyes, I look greedy guys/Who try to pull me in their dark" speaks for itself.

Silver Forest

  • Narm: "BLOOD ON BLOOD". The song itself isn't narmy, but that edgy, melodramatic title...
