YMMV / The Roommate

Go To

  • Audience-Alienating Premise: With no big names (aside from Matt Lanter), poor marketing and similarities to Single White Female, this film just sank without a trace.
  • Critical Backlash: A 3% on Rotten Tomatoes? Ouch.
  • Les Yay: A strong belief for Rebecca's obsession over Sarah is that she's a Psycho Lesbian. If she's not this, then she's a very jealous and clingy "friend".
  • Moral Event Horizon: That bit with the kitten in the dryer. Doubles as a Tearjerker.
  • Nightmare Fuel: Rebecca is clearly a mentally unstable person & is SO attached to Sara enough to just get rid of anybody who simply takes Sara away from her for even as long as a few seconds.
  • Paranoia Fuel: The idea that your roommate could be a mentally unstable person who may be become just a little too attached to you could be enough to make you want to live by yourself for a while.
  • Signature Scene: Tracy being attacked by Rebecca in the shower.
  • They Copied It, So It Sucks!: The movie is very often called a rip-off of Single White Female. It doesn't help that the scene where Rebecca stabs Jason to death is lifted almost shot for shot from a similar scene from the former.
  • Unintentionally Sympathetic: Rebecca. Though she did not exactly draw people to cheer on her violence, some people related too painfully well to Rebecca's awkward attempts to make friends and appear "normal." The scene where Rebecca's classmates run into her at the cafe might seem familiar to anyone who has suffered a mental illness or merely been labeled as weird in high school, and has wanted to move past that reputation. Though Rebecca clearly has not moved past her high school habits, which can bring an uncomfortable realization to some people that their high school years are never fully behind them, even after they graduate and move on to the real world of college and employment.
