YMMV / The Next Batman: Second Son

Go To

  • Arc Fatigue: Due to the way the series was released, it takes over half the series before the reader actually learns why Jace was in exile and is hated by his family. When binged or read in the physical issues, it's not too much of an issue. But in the original format, the story drags quite a bit and is very decompressed.
  • Broken Base: There has been a significant split in opinions regarding the less-than-flattering portrayal of the Fox Family in this series, or more specifically, the character of Lucius Fox. There's the first camp, who absolutely hate the retcon that Lucius was always a morally dubious absentee parent who's dangerously close to becoming a villain in his own right, decrying it as akin to what happened with Dr. Emil Hamilton from the Superman comics. Then there's the second camp, who do like the retcon, seeing it as a step forward towards making the Foxes more dynamic characters with understandable flaws after years of them being static cast members who just fade in and out of the background until there comes a time for Lucius or an unfortunate member of his family to serve as a glorified hostage for the Supervillain of the Week.
  • One-Scene Wonder: The surprise appearance of Katana along with the reveal that she mentored Jace during the years of his exile from Gotham has been given a lot of positive reception. Between Tatsu's portrayal as an Older and Wiser Badass Teacher and her encouraging words to help uplift Jace, some readers are keeping their fingers crossed in hope for potential future appearances that could shed more light on the two's history together.
  • So Okay, It's Average: One of the major complaints levelled at this miniseries is that in spite of the story improving upon what was teased in DC Future State and making great strides towards fleshing out Jace Fox as a protagonist, the impact is undercut by the painfully mediocre artwork, especially when compared to the art of the other Bat-Titles that were ongoing around the time of its release. The decision to also cut up the full issues of the comic to be digitally released first as short chapters also significantly screwed with the story's pacing for those who read the book in that format.
  • They Changed It, Now It Sucks!: While it's one thing for Lucius to Take a Level in Jerkass after what happened to his family in The Joker War, for fans, it's quite another to retcon that Lucius was always a dick by making him both a distant father and revealing he helped Jace avoid jail time for his hit-and-run with the use of an Army of Lawyers to dig up dirt on the man Jace killed by accident. As detailed above, this development hasn't flown over well at all in certain circles.
