YMMV / The Kingdom of Crooked Mirrors

Go To

  • Ensemble Dark Horse: Anidag, a beautiful and cruel Femme Fatale and devoted Daddy's Little Villain, is incredibly popular despite only appearing in three chapters of the story.
  • Incest Yay Shipping: Nushrok and Anidag are shipped with each other very avidly, since many fans interpret their interactions as not quite familial. It exists even in the film's fandom, though in the film, Anidag's love for her father is Adapted Out and she plots to poison him: it is sometimes interpreted as him being an Incest-ant Admirer.
  • Multiple Demographic Appeal: Children read it for the heroes, while people in their teens and older love the villains' storylines.
  • Narm: The crude Soviet propaganda shoehorned into the story is hard to take seriously today. In an especially memorable moment, Nushrok gets terrified of Olya's red pioneer scarf.
  • Sweetness Aversion: Many teenage and older readers have admitted to their annoyance about the girls' Plot Armor and the overly sugary ending, feeling that all of it doesn't fit with the dark tone of the rest of the story.
  • What Do You Mean, It's for Kids?: The eponymous Kingdom is a Crapsack World of tyranny and the lowest methods of Realpolitik that wouldn't look out of place in Westeros, an eleven-year-old gets tortured, three children almost get killed, and multiple readers have noticed Incest Subtext in the relationship between Nushrok and Anidag. It's also a popular children's story.
