YMMV / The King Kong Show

Go To

  • Broken Base: Fans of Kong over the generations are deeply divided over this series. Is it a decent tribute to the king of movie monsters? Or is it a cheap, unwatchable cash grab whose sole purpose was to generate Kong merchandise?
  • Complete Monster: Dr. Who is the most dangerous and persistent enemy of King Kong and the Bond family. Obsessed with the idea of taking over the world, Who tries to capture Kong on several occasions to use him as a weapon at his command. Throughout the show, Dr. Who attempts to subjugate the Earth by using various machines to cause a large amount of destruction all across the planet, such as a rocket armed with a nuclear device; a radioactive machine capable of melting the ice of the North Pole and flooding the entirety of the Western Hemisphere; a solar mirror powerful enough to destroy all the cities of the West Coast; or even mechanical monsters such as a robotic Sphinx and Mechanikong that are capable of causing lots of havoc. Not only does he successfully destroy entire cities more than once, his crimes also include repeatedly trying to kill the Bond family, even the two children, and holding a benevolent scientist's family hostage to force him to help him in his plans at one point. Callous and remorseless, Dr. Who is much more of a monster than any of the creatures fought by King Kong.
  • Germans Love David Hasselhoff: The series was never very successful in the U.S. and has faded to obscurity in the decades that followed. However, the series endured a lasting legacy in Japan, where the series was produced, as it ended up airing at a time when movie monsters were thriving in Japanese cinemas. Additionally, a swath of merchandise related to the series dominated most Japanese shelves. It was a case of being at the right place at the right time.
  • Retroactive Recognition: It's unlikely that anyone in 1966 would've flipped their shit over seeing Hayao Miyazaki listed in the credits as a key animator. Now...not so much.
