YMMV / The Kaiju Preservation Society

Go To

  • Catharsis Factor: Rob Sanders never stops being an entitled Smug Snake who screws everyone over for his own profit and amusement and brags about it. Seeing Jamie threaten to leave him to be eaten by carnivorous fauna, making a recording of his rulebreaking, and blackmailing him to leave the kaiju world for good is satisfying. Sanders being eaten alive after trying to poach another kaiju and murder the main characters is even better.
  • Complete Monster: Rob Sanders, Jamie Gray's boss, is a third-generation businessman who is introduced demoting a dedicated employee to a demeaning commission job with no benefits in the middle of a pandemic. Rob later reveals that he did this solely to win a $1 bet on whether a certain number of employees would take that mistreatment over unemployment and that he makes such bets constantly and with no emotion but satisfaction. Rob also sells out his company to a competitor, getting everyone laid off. However, these loathsome deeds pale next to Rob's efforts to abduct Kaiju from another dimension and harvest and sell their nuclear energy, ordering the murder of several government agents to facilitate this. Rob also plans to hide the evidence by letting one kaiju self-destruct in the middle of a Canadian city—possibly killing thousands if not more—while planning to profit financially and politically from the fallout of an apparent nuclear first strike. Rob also threatens to slowly and painfully kill several Kaiju Preservation Society members if they antagonize him.
  • Ensemble Dark Horse: Mischievous Thrill Seeker Ace Pilot Satie is a secondary character at best, but he's probably the most popular person in the story.
  • Moral Event Horizon: Rob Sanders is a Hate Sink for the story, but it sinks in just how irredeemable he is when he explains that he humiliated and demoted Jamie just for a bet similar to the one in Trading Places and isn't remotely sorry about it. This establishes him as as a truly awful person even before he murders several characters to poach a kaiju for his corporation and almost causes a nuclear meltdown in our dimension.
  • The Un Twist: Rob Sanders being behind the abduction of a nuclear-powered kaiju isn't terribly surprising after he's spent the entire book being a smug, greedy prick who tried to steal some kaiju samples earlier and has a bad Lack of Empathy. This is even lampshaded.
It was Rob Sanders, because of course it was.
