YMMV / The Black Flower

Go To

  • Accidental Innuendo: When Marinette gives Zoé some clothes after the latter takes a bath, she asks her if it correctly hugs all of her curves. For fashion, of course...
  • Alternative Character Interpretation: Is Lila an irredeemable monster that deserves to burn in hell for what she has done or is she like this because people enable her behaviour and would actually get better if she was given treatment? As stated below, at least one person seems to believe the latter.
  • Base-Breaking Character: Most likely due to influence from canon and how he's disliked in general, Gabriel is not liked by some readers and preferred that he didn't get a redemption arc at all. Otherwise, he's fairly liked for his Adaptational Nice Guy and Intelligence.
  • Broken Base:
    • The writing of the fic. Some consider it very good, if not excellent, others consider it really bad and too filled with grammatical errors to be enjoyable (which however, is because English is not the author's first language and a keen reader will notice the author tries to correct what they can).
    • The fic itself. There are those who like it for being original in its ideas and how the characters are characterized and those who dislike it because the characters are too OOC and sometimes, they feel inconsistent.
  • Catharsis Factor:
    • Felix's death by the hands of Shadow Moth. Considering how much a repulsive sexual harasser he's been during the whole fic, it certainly qualify.
    • For those who were bored with Adrien never growing out a spine and always following Lila in classic salt fics, him turning on her and defeat her towards the end of the fic can definitely count.
  • Crosses the Line Twice: Lila is killed by being beaten to a pulp by Multirat in a rather gruesome way. In itself, the action is absolutely horrid but because the target is Lila it comes off as cathartic.
  • Cry for the Devil: At least one person voiced sympathy towards Lila despite how much of a sociopath she is in the fic.
  • Evil Is Cool: The girls and Hawk Moth, despite being terrorists who destroyed the city several times, are quite appreciated. Obviously, if they are compared to Lila and Felix, they come off as the lesser evil, but it still counts.
  • Fandom-Specific Plot: Marinette is heavily bullied by her former friends and Lila, she gets akumatized because of it and Chloé is among the very few characters who decide to side with her. Such a plot is perhaps one of the most common ones among 'Akumatized Marinette' fics. What comes after though...
  • Hilarious in Hindsight: Depending on the point of of view, it can also be be harsh. At the end, Gabriel manages to obtain the Ladybug and Cat Miraculous, and revives Emilie and Nathalie. A year later, that would canonically happen in Season 5.
  • I Knew It!: A couple of readers deducted that Lila must have done something to Fu to get the earrings. While his attempted murder by her hands came as a surprise, they were right on believing that.
  • Love to Hate: Felix, hands down. Since his characterization is that of a sex offender, readers find themselves hating him with a passion. Somehow, the author managed to not make him boring though and made it clear that despite being able to get away with his antics most of the time thanks to being Chat Noir, he's not infallible and might get a punch to the face or a twisted arm for his trouble.
  • Moral Event Horizon:
    • Lila killing Marinette in the very first chapter definitely counts. Then it turns out she crossed it far earlier by almost killing Fu for the Ladybug Miraculous.
    • Felix crossed it by constantly molesting Marinette, though it happens off-screen. Otherwise, molesting Rose and Sabrina on-screen can count.
  • One-Scene Wonder: Hilariously enough, Ren Amamiya appearing in the ending probably made more of an impact that most of the events of the fic.
  • Shocking Moments:
    • Audrey not recognizing Zoé as her daughter can come off as her being her usual unpleasant self. The actual reason is that Zoé was conceived after Audrey was raped and is as such her Trauma Button. As Audrey is pretty much never given such a sympathetic backstory, a lot of readers may end up surprised.
    • There were people who believed that Master Fu willingly gave Lila the earrings due to being a Horrible Judge of Character, so when it turned out that the man was almost killed by Lila and had the earrings stolen from him, some were caught off-guard.
  • The Woobie: Marinette, like in most fics of this kind. She's bullied by people she thought were her friends, the heroes harass her harshly and the first chapter ends with her death. How can you not feel sorry for her?
