YMMV / SpongeBob SquarePants S 1 E 16 "Valentine's Day" / "The Paper"

Go To

Valentine's Day:

  • Alternate Character Interpretation: SpongeBob. Was his anxiety about Patrick's gift initially failing due to the fact he built up suspense to Patrick over it, or was it because SpongeBob was aware of how berserk Patrick would get?
  • Broken Base: Fans either find this a classic episode with some hilariously memorable lines or one of the first truly bad ones due to Patrick going full Psychopathic Manchild.
  • Franchise Original Sin: This episode is the beginning of Patrick being a Jerkass, something which would become much more prevalent in later seasons in episodes like "Yours, Mine and Mine" and "Rule of Dumb". At least this one had the justification that he started to believe SpongeBob didn't care about him. Later episodes would have Patrick being a Jerkass for no good reason.
  • Memetic Mutation:
    • "I DEFY YOU, HEART MAN!"Explanation
    • "HEART ON STICK MUST DIE!"Explanation
    • The scene of SpongeBob and Patrick on the rollercoaster with Sponge having a great time while Patrick is still trying to get over the handshake is often used in response to someone being dragged along for something they can't stand.
  • Nightmare Fuel: While Patrick's rampage has funny parts, there's no denying that, but it's still there, as it shows how dangerous Patrick can get if he doesn't get his way. The nightmare faces he pulls at several points only make him more creepier, as does the fact that he's perfectly willing to beat up SpongeBob and other people (and the former is shown cringing in complete fear as he prepares for the inevitable). Had not Sandy showed up with the chocolate balloon, the frightened sponge and the other fish would've been done for.

The Paper:

  • Broken Base: Like its sister episode "Valentine's Day", it's either a classic that cleverly uses a piece of paper to create many of the jokes or one of the worst episodes of Season 1 for how repetitive the humor is for revolving around a piece of paper and for how out of character Squidward is for being willing to give away all of his belongings for a piece of paper.
  • Genius Bonus: SpongeBob claims to be playing "Mary Had a Little Lamb" in A minor, but actually plays it in C major. Those two keys are relative to one another.
  • Hilarious in Hindsight: This would not be the last time Squidward would become envious over SpongeBob having a mundane object due to the latter's more active imagination.
  • Memetic Mutation:
    • Squidward setting up and subsequently putting away his lawn chair is a common social media meme, usually used to describe a scenario where someone gets excited only to learn the disappointing second part.
    • Squidward's wrong notes.Explanation
