YMMV / Queen B

Go To

  • Abandon Shipping: A lot of former Poppy/Bea shippers jumped ship after the "human sacrifice" in Chapter 11, now finding Poppy too morally despicable for a redemption arc or becoming a love interest.
  • Awesome Moments:
    • In Book 1, Chapter 10, after discovering Benji's true nature, Bea gives him an epic "The Reason You Suck" Speech (and can optionally beat the ever-loving crap out of him), before Professor Kingsley pulls a Big Damn Heroes, busts into Benji's room with the cops in tow and knocks him to the floor.
    • Just for better measure, the rest of the school believes Bea over Poppy saying it's a publicity stunt, even after she tried humiliating her with a dubstep remix of her hogcalling video.
  • Base-Breaking Character:
    • Is Poppy a great and highly attractive woman who it's fun to flirt and have tension with? Or is she a despicable person who Bea should utterly destroy and have no pity for? There are many people on each side.
    • While some players sympathize with Persephone Dalton due to her being a victim of Poppy's, others think her actions as X are unjustifiable, as Bea did nothing to her.
  • Broken Base:
    • Players are split on the direction taken by Book 2. Some are fine with being the new Queen Bee and find the "bad girl" route especially enjoyable, while others think the "good girl" route is wasted as it feels fake, and that it was a missed opportunity to show how a good girl leads the student body.
    • Some players are fine with fighting a new opponent to defend the crown, while others feel the story should focus more on the fight with Poppy, after all she got away with bullying for at least 2 years.
  • Catharsis Factor:
    • After finding out what a creepy and disgusting Stalker with a Crush Benji is, many players found the option to give him a beatdown a treat. Even better, it's not a premium choice (which a lot of people were thankful for).
    • Seeing Poppy lose her title as Queen B in Book 1, Chapter 16 is a sight to behold after everything she's done. Even more so if Bea wins the title and proceeds to expose Poppy to everyone in the audience.
    • After what Poppy has done to Zoey in Book 1, Chapter 11, seeing the former become the new "human sacrifice" in Book 2, Chapter 9 is definitely a sight to behold. And she got pushed into the fake blood pool by Zoey, no less.
    • After Lexi is revealed to be the one who got Bea and Kingsley into trouble with the Dean in the first place, and later got Kingsley fired, many players gladly took the option in Book 2, Chapter 12 to give her a "Reason You Suck" Speech and expose her on the hit list.
  • Fan-Preferred Couple: Many fans want Carter and Veronica to be official love interests, the former for being the highest-ranking man in the T and having dated Poppy before the story began, and the latter for being a member of Poppy's posse and the façade she puts up as a livestreamer.
  • Foe Yay Shipping: A number of players want Poppy and/or Chloe to become love interests for Bea.
  • Heartwarming Moments:
    • In Chapter 2, if Bea jumped into the jello pool, just about everyone comes to her defense when Chloe tries to get her expelled by lying about her cheating her way into Belvoire.
    • Buying the High Society premium dress in Chapter 8 and kissing Professor Kingsley leads to a very lovingly detailed Big Damn Kiss in the rain between Bea and Kingsley, each one detailed for which face/gender you pick for them.
    • Bea and Zoey making up after their fight in Chapter 11.
  • Hilarious in Hindsight: The Big Bad of Book 2 goes by the identity "X" and causes trouble through social media. This as a whole, but especially Zoey's line about how the students of Belvoire can make X a laughing stock through Twitter, became funnier in 2023 when Twitter was renamed to X and became a laughing stock as a result.
  • I Knew It!: Players have correctly predicted that X is Persephone Dalton, who in turn is Selene Montmartre because the bullying she suffered at Belvoire caused her to drop out and plot revenge.
  • LGBT Fanbase: Choices stories in general tend to have these, but this story has many lesbian/bisexual female fans in particular because the main character has the opportunity to hook up with multiple women (Kingsley if female, Poppy, Zoey, Veronica). The bacchanalia chapter specifically is a good example, as it permits the main character to flirt, kiss, and/or have sex with multiple girls (Chloe, Tasha, Poppy, and Veronica) in Zeta.
  • Moral Event Horizon: A lot of former Poppy fans feel that she crossed this line with the way she humiliated Zoey with the "human sacrifice" in Chapter 11. The racist undertones definitely don't help.
  • Nausea Fuel: The Stalker Shrine of Bea that Benji Knoll makes. It's mentioned that it was composed of various foods like mashed potatoes and baguettes, from what is implied to be weeks, if not months ago, and have rotted to the point that no amount of air freshener, flowers, or Bea's perfume can hide the smell, which, according to Bea's reaction when she first comes across it, is sickening.
  • Nightmare Fuel: The Stalker Shrine scene in Chapter 9. Over the course of the book, Bea's things have been going missing, such as her hairbrush, her bra and her perfume. In Chapter 9, Bea catches the scent of her perfume on Benji, the RA, and is convinced he stole it. After persuading him to leave her alone for five minutes, Bea goes into his room and discovers her perfume really has been stolen by Benji. She then catches a glimpse of familiar red lace sticking out of Benji's closet and, against her better judgement, opens it to find that all of her things were stolen by Benji and used to make a (rather crude looking) Stalker Shrine of her. Including the food from her fridge, which has gone off and started to rot. The Scare Chord that plays the moment this is revealed makes it even more disturbing.
  • No Yay: A segment of the player base was extremely unhappy to learn that one of the love interests was a professor, considering teacher-student relationships to be grossly inappropriate. Chelsa, the book's lead writer, later clarified on Twitter that this was included in the story because the Teacher/Student Romance trope is a staple of the genre, and she most certainly does not condone such relationships in real life. Also, the relationship potentially starts before Bea knows Ian/Ina is a teacher, which does help lessen the initial blow.
  • Paranoia Fuel: The ending of Book 1 and the sneak peeks of Book 2 exude this. Somebody (only known as "X") has hacked into The T, locked the editor out, deleted the submissions page, and posted evidence of Bea and Kingsley's relationship (even though the evidence was thought to have been completely destroyed). In the sneak peek, "X" sends a cryptic message to Bea, along with a photo of her and her love interest on the beach right there, with Bea having no idea who this mysterious person is. Who is this individual? Are they a student, a teacher, or someone else? Why are they targeting Bea? How did they hack into The T, and how did they get their hands on photos that were supposedly destroyed? And who knows what they'll do next?
X: I see you. Bet you don't see me. But you will... Can't wait for next year, Bea Hughes! Kisses!
X: Roses are red, you shine like a ruby, you better watch your back, I'm coming for you, newbie.
  • They Wasted a Perfectly Good Plot: Many felt that the story should have been set in high school instead of college because the emphasis on cliques and social status is far more indicative of high school culture than it is of college.
  • Unintentionally Unsympathetic: On the other hand, though, some players feel this way about Zoey following her lashing out at Bea at the end of Chapter 11. While her being upset about the "human sacrifice" is understandable, her getting mad at Bea and saying she's turning into Poppy comes across as misplaced anger at best and hypocrisy at worst, given how Zoey's been encouraging Bea to humiliate and take down Poppy at all cost, including breaking and entering, and was even the one to convince Bea to go to the ill-fated bacchanalia in the first place. There were also quite a few fans who thought Zoey's response to Bea's apology was extremely lackluster.
  • The Woobie: Zoey by Chapter 11. During Zeta House's bacchanalia, Poppy picked her to be the "human sacrifice" by exposing her past, including her juvenile record of her shoplifting, out of racism and classism towards Zoey. Afterwards, she was pelted with tomatoes before her friend Bea exposed Poppy's credit cards on the T and got her out.
