YMMV / Planet of the Dinosaurs

Go To

  • Esoteric Happy Ending: The film ends years later with the surviving crew members having established a safe residence while Chuck and Charlotte have an infant son with Nyla saying it doesn't matter if they're ever rescued since they've managed to build a life. But then Fridge Logic kicks in and you realize that Chuck and Charlotte's son is going to probably grow up without anyone his own age and will most likely spend the majority of his life alone after the last of the grown-ups die.
  • Hilarious in Hindsight:
    • Harvey surmises that a nest full of huge eggs belongs to a giant chicken and gets impaled by the parent, a Centrosaurus. If this film had been made 30 years later, he probably would have been killed by some kind of feathered theropod, or perhaps a terror bird, just to drive the "giant chicken" punchline home.
    • A planet full of prehistoric animals. Sounds familiar?
  • Just Here for Godzilla: Most people watch this movie for the cool-looking stop motion dinosaurs who unfortunately don't have much screen time.
  • Narm: The movie's got a very cheesy and silly tone to it thanks to its So Bad, It's Good acting and the very boring and rather generic human characters. Fortunately the dinosaurs are the movie's good points that keep it from being too cheesy and silly.
  • Padding: The film barely has a plot, and its budget was mostly devoted to the stop animation dinosaurs, so unfortunately, most of the first half is watching the crew slowly walk through the forest, swamp, and later the plateau, taking frequent rest periods, with the movie showing every single boring second of it.
  • The Scrappy: Harvey Baylor is meant to be a Hate Sink but he seriously crosses the line into this with his immense stupidity and uselessness, to the point it gets him killed.
  • So Bad, It's Good: Even more so thanks to RiffTrax.
