- Accidental Innuendo: This line said by Party Favor with a suggestive look and a smile on his face:"Well, you've certainly come to the right place for friendship."
- Adorkable: Twilight's obviously still not used to being a princess: when Double Diamond first introduces Twilight to Starlight, she does a nervous grin and fluffs up her wings before Starlight points it out.
- Fanfic Fuel: This episode introduces another ancient sorcerer, Meadowbrook, who apparently had eight famous magical relics attributed to her. Writers, get cracking!
- Fan Nickname: Before Starlight Glimmer's name was revealed, fans were calling her Mayor Marks/Marx, a reference to Karl Marx, due to a joke that Starlight Glimmer was promoting Communism.
- Hilarious in Hindsight:
- Hoofball is confirmed to be canon several months after we see the Mane 6 promoting Super Bowl XLIX. Also hilarious to note that Fluttershy doesn't seem to like hoofball and yet owns a hoofball helmet.
- This is the first season premiere where the main threat to Equestria is a relatively ordinary unicorn, and the Sound Off song is called "In Our Town", which contains the title of an episode of The X-Files that also has a Mundanger in a Town with a Dark Secret.
- I Knew It!: Based on the episode previews and animatics, many fans predicted that the episode would be about The Evils of Free Will and that the town would be something akin to a totalitarian regime. They were pretty much spot on.
- Narm: Applejack's unusually deep voice when she says "Careful, Pinkie!"
- Strawman Has a Point: Starlight Glimmer's insistence that cutie marks are evil and removing them is the only way to guarantee equality is revealed to be little more than a means of feeding her own lust for power. However, there are quite a few inherently creepy things about the concept of a cutie mark. If your Cutie Mark and special talent turns out to be something that isn't all that useful or conducive to supporting yourself or, even with it, you're still rather mediocre compared to others with the same gift? Worse still, if you don't even want your mark, or to be marked for a specific destiny in general? Suddenly that village starts to have an appeal. It certainly would to one colt in particular...
