YMMV / Hatchimals

Go To

  • Broken Base: There are several people who decry that Hatchimals is as a lazy trend as there are folks who think the franchise is adorable and brilliant. The Hatchimals Surprise was met with some contention as the robotic animals lacked beaks and hatched in a different fashion.
  • Catharsis Factor: Annoyed with the Hatchimals? The CollEGGtibles app (version 1.4) allows you to rapidly pelt the critters with snowballs in Polar Paradise.
  • Germans Love David Hasselhoff: The toys were made by a Canadian company, but were the biggest toy for Christmas in the United States when the line came out, and the country got tons of merchandise based on the toy including cosmetics, jewelry, storybooks and board games. The franchise is also big in Japan, where it's marketed as Umaerete! Woomo.
  • Memetic Mutation:
    • The first version of Hatchimals were infamous for allegedly cursing in their sleep. Some folks have taken upon the voice mimicry feature to make it appear the toys are cursing.
    • Hatchimals' breakout in the holidays of 2016 was infamous for continuing the trend of the toys being sold out and parents going crazy over that. Resellers were known to mark up the prices to the point of being mentioned on the news.
  • Even Better Sequel / More Popular Spin-Off: Several have noted to prefer the CollEGGtibles over the robotic originals, possibly due to price and similarity to other surprise toys.
  • Never Live It Down: Despite its popularity slightly waning from the Christmas craze, people still remember Hatchimals as that one Christmas toy that swears and being severely rare despite increased production.
  • Sweet Dreams Fuel: Baby animals hatching out of eggs, and you get to take care of them!
  • They Changed It, Now It Sucks!: Some people who were used to the whimsical, fantasy setting that the toyline maintained in its earlier years did not find the more recent seasons very appealing, which jumped on the bandwagon of being modern, contemporary, trendy, and influencer-inspired, likely because of the success of L.O.L. Surprise! which influenced several non-fashion doll toylines into being similar to it.
  • Ugly Cute: The appeal of the original Hatchimals, to mimic the look of actual baby animals which aren't as cute as most imagined.
  • Viewer Gender Confusion: The Colleggtibles all have eyelashes even though the Collector's guide suggests some of them are male. This is somewhat averted in the animated web shorts where Tigrette and a few other masculine Hatchimals lack eyelashes.
    • While Draggle lacks eyelashes, their child-like voice teeters the line between sounding like a boy or a girl.
  • Woolseyism: In Japan, Hatchimals are known as Umarete Woomo, which comes with instructions that feature kawaii artwork of the birds and a food card to feed them with.
