YMMV / Frollo Freak

Go To

  • Accidental Innuendo: Everything about Theodora's box, the central macguffin of Didn't It Blow Your Mind, Claude Frollo?. It's almost never called "the artifact," "the container," or even just "the box," it's always Theodora's box. The way male characters describe it makes it sound like they're talking about a "box" in the slang sense.
  • Alternative Character Interpretation: Most of her stories offer up alternate interpretations of Frollo, which tend to paint him as more sympathetic and attractive. It's also become popular for readers to make their own interpretations of Frollo Freak's original characters, interpreting Danisha as racist and shallow and Iggy as an irresponsible loser.
  • Bile Fascination: Most of the interest in Frollo Freak's work comes from this. Many of her stories have received dramatic readings, sporkings, and parodies, and she's been featured multiple times in online forums centered around "fanwank" and Internet drama because of her gatekeeping behavior.
  • Designated Hero: Danisha Wood. As the Claude & Me series went on, Danisha's friends and acquaintances fell into this, too.
  • Epileptic Trees: A number of elaborate and extremely unlikely fan theories are present in Frollo Freak's body of work. The most notable is a recurring theory that Claude Frollo was actually nice all along, and that all of the evil things he did weren't really done by him; rather, an evil clone of him, who was made by the gypsies after the real Frollo was drugged with hallucinogenics, committed all the crimes, and Frollo himself was an innocent victim.
  • Fetish Retardant: Any sexy scene with Frollo in it.
  • Hilarious in Hindsight:
    • Her Jedi in Oz series is a crossover between The Wizard of Oz, the Star Wars movies, and various Disney properties. Decades after the series was written, Disney bought Star Wars and produced a prequel to the Oz books.
    • The Disney Seven briefly mentions Sid from the first Toy Story movie becoming a Mad Scientist when he's older. Come Toy Story 3, we actually do find out what an older Sid does for a living: he's a trash truck driver.
  • Magnificent Bastard: What REALLY Happened (link): Clopin Trouillefou is the leader of the Romani population of Paris who seeks revenge on Claude Frollo, France's Minister of Justice, and also wishes to end gypsy persecution. To this end, he makes an arrangement with an old rival of Frollo's named Jean-Michel du Champs who wants to be Minister of Justice. The night after the Feast of Fools, Clopin imprisons Frollo in his own dungeons and replaces him with a disguised Jean-Michel, who begins sullying Frollo's name by persecuting many Parisans. Learning of Jean-Michel's plans to betray him, Clopin outplays him by subtly getting Quasimodo and Phoebus on his side, resulting in Jean-Michel's death. Even after being paralyzed in a violent incident at the Court of Miracles, Clopin still refuses to give up and is soon working on new plans. Only failing due to things he had no reasonable way of knowing about, Clopin proves a genuinely cunning and compelling antagonist.
  • Older Than They Think: Certain aspects of the Claude & Me series were lifted from the original Hunchback of Notre Dame novel, such as Frollo's more sympathetic traits. The supporting cast is also a mixture of actual characters invented by Victor Hugo and random OCs invented by Frollo Freak.
  • They Wasted a Perfectly Good Plot: The time-travel mechanic in the Claude & Me series is only ever used to allow Danisha and Frollo to visit each other. It's nowhere to be found when plot-related issues arise, and although characters frequently mention or allude to other historical periods, they never actually try to go anywhere but medieval Paris. One has to wonder how much more interesting the series would be if Danisha and co. actually travelled to these time periods they love so much instead of just mentioning them offhandedly every so often.
  • Unintentional Period Piece: It's obvious in hindsight that most of her stories were written in the '90s. The Disney Seven has characters use very dated-sounding slang, and the Claude & Me series gives Danisha and Frollo pagers.
  • Unintentionally Unsympathetic:
    • Frollo and Danisha for being needlessly cruel, petty, and dramatic.
    • Iggy for being irresponsible and feeding people pot brownies without their knowledge.
