YMMV / Cartoon Network Groovies

Go To

  • Adaptation Displacement:
    • The original Josie and the Pussycats comic was displaced by the Groovie, as well as by the earlier animated series and later live-action film.
    • This is to say nothing of the Jabberjaw Groovie, with many viewers admitting their only exposure to Jabberjaw was through it and not the original cartoon. Many even thought the band was above ground rather than aquatic.
    • Many people may be surprised to learn that "Atom's Theme" is actually a remake of The Atom Ant Show's opening theme song, and three of the four Horsemen of the Apocalypse Atom faces are actual enemies featured in said opening — the three-headed man "selling smiles" was originally a trio of crooks, the general in the tank is fairly faithfully adapted (albeit, he never showed his face in the original opening) and the giant, fire-spewing robot was originally a mechanical dragon.
  • Awesome Art: The Josie and the Pussycats Groovie manages to incorporate a bunch of different art styles for the different music genres. Special mention, as per popular enough viewer opinion, goes to the KISS-inspired segment.
  • Designated Hero: The Huckleberry Hound short. So apparently it's okay for Huckleberry to forcefully silence the entire city and then sing a loud, off-key rendition of "Oh My Darling, Clementine" that makes everyone scream in pain?
  • Fridge Brilliance: In Atom's Theme, Atom Ant manages to defeat 3 of the four horsemen, but never manages to explicitly defeat the one setting up bombs around the world (the nuclear bombs were dealt with, at least). As it's implied they're nuclear versions of the Horsemen of the Apocalypse, and this enemy (who arrived on a pale horse) is Death, this makes sense—Death, while having been avoided in numerous situations where it was at risk to occur, is, on average or otherwise, by far a greater challenge to 'conquer' than the other three already are, so Ant can't be shown beating it.
  • Fanfic Fuel: The Jabberjaw short gives fuel to a Setting Update of the show.
  • Memetic Mutation: "Me and my friends get no respect—!" from the Jabberjaw Groovie.
  • Nightmare Fuel: Atom's Theme, despite being rather upbeat and having a happy ending, handles the rather dark subject matter of an impending nuclear apocalypse, complete with the backing track being a Voice Clip Song remix of the infamous educational warning film about the atomic bomb, Duck and Cover.
"We must be ready for a new danger. It is such a big explosion. There is no time to look around or wait. It can smash in buildings, without any warning. His job is to help protect us when there is danger of the atomic bomb."
  • Parody Displacement: For some people born in the mid- or late '90s, they might only know about several Hanna-Barbera cartoons because of their Groovies.
