YMMV / Buffy the Vampire Slayer S3E16 "Doppelgangland"

Go To

  • Aluminum Christmas Trees: Yes, there really is a psychological test (of over 200 questions) where one of the questions is whether you ever wanted to be a florist. (The trick is not all of the questions are meant to be used in analysis - some are just there to make sure you're not answering randomly.)
  • Best Known for the Fanservice: The episode's most famous scenes are Vampire!Willow hitting on regular Willow, with seductive neck lick - and Willow in the Spy Catsuit remarking "gosh look at those" re: her pushed up boobs.
  • Harsher in Hindsight:
    • The two most horrific words in Buffy: "Bored now".
      • Related to this, Willow's speech at the end about not wanting to be like her vampire self who "destroyed everything she touched" can come off as this.
    • Willow's conversation with Anya after the temporal fold spell fails. One almost wishes that Willow could have been teleported into early season 6 so that conversation could be had with her older self.
Willow: Magic is dangerous, Anya. It's not to be toyed with.
  • Hilarious in Hindsight:
    • Willow describes the vampire-Willow as "kind of gay." Buffy assures her that a vampire's personality has nothing to do with that of the original human. Angel replies "Well, actually...[Buffy glares] That's a good point."
      • This is made worse because Willow uses the exact same words in "Tabula Rasa" from Season 6 when she realizes (once more) her sexual preference after having wiped clean the memory of the whole cast due to a spell misfire.
    • After Willow hears about her double looking like a dominatrix, she scoffs at the thought of her and Oz playing Mistress of Pain games. Alyson Hannigan ad libbed the femdom scene in the first American Pie and in the second she's flanderized into a super crazy male dom chick.
    • In a season five episode of How I Met Your Mother, the gang see a "doppelganger" of Lily, the character played by Alyson Hannigan. The doppelganger is a rather nasty stripper with a European accent. Unfortunately, the writers didn't go with a quote of the Buffy line.
  • Les Yay: Plenty of the uber-creepy kind between Willow and her vampire counterpart from a parallel universe, culminating in VampWillow licking Willow's neck.
  • No Yay: Willow and VampWillow. Had Willow not shot her, VampWillow (who's not only a vampire, but also creepily insane) was well on her way toward forcing the issue, which doesn't help the playful subtext that continues afterward.
  • She Really Can Act: Alyson Hannigan easily plays both regular Willow and vampire!Willow in the same scene, as well as extra scenes of each of them pretending to be the other.
