YMMV / Batgirls (2021)

Go To

  • It's the Same, Now It Sucks!: Minor case with Steph's costume, due to the fact it's still her Spoiler costume from the New 52 and Rebirth period, instead of actually wearing her Batgirl costume.
  • Hilarious in Hindsight: This series heavily implies that Stephanie has romantic feelings for Cassandra. In Gotham Knights (2023), the show's version of Stephanie comes out as a lesbian in the third-to-last episode and becomes romantically attached to the show's version of Harper Row. In the comics, Harper Row was originally created as a Suspiciously Similar Substitute for Cass.
  • Just Here for Godzilla: Batgirls has quickly become popular for being the only series actually showing Barbara's mobility issues after the events of The Joker War.
  • Les Yay:
    • As is typical with Stephanie and Cassandra, a lot of their scenes together have them being very affectionate with each other to the point of being a Pseudo-Romantic Friendship. Stephanie, specifically, constantly gushes about how amazing Cassandra is, and issue 2 even has her calling her "babe", which the same issue showed to be an Affectionate Nickname Barbara uses for Dick.
    • The fourth issue of the series is also full of this, with Cassandra trying to free Stephanie from the main villain's mind control by saying she needs her, culminating with a rather suggestive hug between the two girls.
    • Issue 7 features an Imagine Spot from Cass of her and Steph going undercover as a young couple at the Iceberg Lounge, with Cass dressed in a suit.
    • In the 14th issue Stephanie's letter to Cassandra talks fondly of their friendship and ends with her saying "I love you".
    • In the 17th issue Steph and Cass dance very close together, and Steph answers a question by retorting "Does Catwoman look good in latex?"
  • Ship-to-Ship Combat: TimSteph and StephCass shippers have been at each others' throats since the start of Batgirls. The amount of Les Yay between the two girls in the series, coupled with the fact Stephanie and Cassandra were implied to be a couple in DC Future State, has led many fans to either hope or fear the two Batgirls will become an Official Couple, something deeply opposed by part of the Tim Drake's fandom since TimSteph is regarded to be a One True Pairing of sorts (despite its rocky state in canon).
  • They Changed It, Now It Sucks!: The out-of-nowhere Age Lift the characters have gone through. Per Word of God (or at least one of the co-writers, the other of whom disagreed immediately in the same interview), Cass and Steph are both 13-15, which is way too young for the characters (Steph was going to college and Cass is supposed to be about the same age as Jason Todd), and leads to a great deal of Squick given Steph was in an explicitly sexual relationship with Tim Drake in the Rebirth era. It also makes them younger than Bratty Half-Pint Damian Wayne, who is explicitly 14 in his current series. The co-writer of the book later back-pedalled and insisted this was a 'mis-speak' and that they're actually 16-17 (something that the rest of the team had earlier stated or implied was their own opinion in the interview where the mis-speak occured), but as many pointed out, they didn't see this reflected in the book itself as the two were still written as younger teens, (though this could be explained as flanderisation given Steph's upbeat personality could be miswritten as childishness or the general tone of the book giving this impression). Discussion of the character's younger ages pretty much dominated any other discussion about the book after it debuted, as many of their fans were pissed that DC seemed to be treating them as children rather than letting them grow up, and saw this as DC dialling back their character development.
