YMMV / Azure Rain

Go To

  • Alternate Character Interpretation: Selkess.
    • It’s never revealed in canon how much sway madness had over his actions so fans can speculate a lot about how far his insanity has progressed and how much of his brilliant plans are actually just throwing evil at the wall to see what sticks. With all this taken into account he could simultaneously be a fully aware and being forced to do things he doesn’t want to do (hinted at in Lleuwellyn’s flashback) right up until the end of Azure Rain, a complete psychopath with only hints of his former self popping up here or there, and everything in between.
  • Angst? What Angst?: Azurite gets over Ms. Evans’s death pretty quickly, but this may be because he finally realizes how terribly she was treating him and he is now being taken care of by Eureka
  • Big Good: Lleu Gera, maybe
  • Crack Pairing: Baltan/Naesa was one of the first pairings suggested by a beta reader.
  • Fan-Preferred Couple: A lot of people, Shipper on Deck including the Roselin Productions members, ship Eureka and Baltan. Unfortunately Eureka is confirmed as heterosexual and this will never happen in canon. Still, one can dream.
  • Harsher in Hindsight: Soon after his introduction, Lleuwellyn says that Baltan must be blind if he can’t see the resemblance between Eureka and Azzie. Baltan is later blinded when he pushes Lleuwellyn out of the way of a bullet.
  • Inferred Holocaust: Kwoltan Gera Azures are praised by Lleuwellyn at one point for being able to fight off Easterners hundreds of years ago. However, there are only about sixty left in the village and more leaving all the time, and the children are forced away from their parents to go to boarding schools…
  • Iron Woobie: All of the main characters can be considered this. It IS a Crapsack World, after all.
  • It Was His Sled: Selkess is the killer. Eureka was banished from his tribe.
    • These are treated as fairly common knowledge in canon and out and it’s hard to talk about either character without mentioning it, so they aren’t marked as spoilers. The details about them ARE spoilers and should be marked.
  • Like You Would Really Do It: Naesa gets the lower portion of her legs mangled in Azure Rain and they don’t heal back.
    • Baltan doesn’t die but he really is blinded permanently.
  • Moral Event Horizon: Selkess has done some awful stuff for sure, but it’s all been Offstage Villainy until he brutally destroys Naesa’s legs from the knees down. This was the moment when he really showed how cruel he could be.
