Anabel is a Brazilian cartoon created by Lancast Mota, after he won a short film contest (whose prize was a full show being made) with his idea, in 2004.
The cartoon itself was first aired in February 26th, 2005, as a full show of pilots about a 7-year-old girl who lives in the 1930s' Rio Grande do Sul.
The show was renewed for a 2nd season in 2010, and retconned into The 2000s, being aired in TV Brasil (Brazil's national TV broadcast), and also in TV Rá-Tim-Bum and Nickelodeon. Around this time, Anabel was also adapted into a Comic Strip.
The show has examples of:
- Big Fun: Ulysses is chubby very fun-loving.
- Bookworm: The titular protagonist is one of these, as her main form of entertainment is reading and imagining herself in many adventures. This is even alluded to in the theme tune.
- Boy Meets Ghoul: Friendship variation, as, in Season 2 Episode 1, Anabel meets and befriends a ghost during her trip. At the end of the episode, they part ways, but he isn't forgotten as the protagonist tells her story to everyone in school seven episodes later.
- Embarassing Relative Teacher: Anabel's mom is a history teacher in the protagonist's school.
- Exotic Eye Designs: Anabel has extremely big eyes.
- HouseHusband: Anabel's dad is normally who takes charge of the house.
- Lighter and Softer: The second season itself is much softer than the original "Anabel" short films and its first season, with the use of much less sarcastic/graphic humor and the "Reading Is Cool" Aesop being
present all around the show. - Military Brat: A reocurring antagonist in the show is the general's son.
- "Reading Is Cool" Aesop: All over the show, with many of the episodes being about Anabel getting through a boom and imagining herself in the adventures of the books she reads.
- The show's intro has 4 verses dedicated to this aesop.
- Retcon: The show had a huge timespan retcon, with the characters now living in the modern day.
- Talking Animal: Anabel's pet is Theo, a tophat-wearing talking crow.
- The '30s: Its first season is set in the 1930s Brazilian state of Rio Grande do Sul
- The Klutz: Ulysses, Anabel's best friend, is extremely clumsy.
