KENTA's defection to Bullet Club works on a number of layers.
Aside from his status as a peer of Prince Devitt/Finn Bálor which was particularly highlighted during their debuts at WWE's NXT territory, not to mention his symbolic mentorship of Taiji Ishimori dating back to their days at Pro Wrestling NOAH, there's also the timing of it all.
  • KENTA/Hideo Itami had began to undergo a Face–Heel Turn on NXT before briefly resuming his team with a babyface Bálor on the way to entering 205 Live in late 2017… around the same time as New Japan Pro-Wrestling saw Jay White's early vignettes and return appearances as The Switchblade.
  • Come mid 2018, Itami would complete his heel turn on WWE's cruiserweight show, in the months just before the Firing Squad mutiny against The Elite. Then in late 2018, Jay White's betrayal of CHAOS with Gedo and Jado in tow led to CHAOS and the Lion Mark home team joining forces to combat the reinvigorated Bullet Club.
  • Around the same time, White started claiming he had yet another mole within CHAOS, and Bullet Club's success rate against the CHAOS/Hontai alliance, particularly their ability to neutralize the dream team of Hiroshi Tanahashi and Kazuchika Okada, was absolutely uncanny. Also in late 2018, KENTA returned to NOAH for a match and rumors of his departure from WWE began to formulate.

Yes, the "mole" storyline was almost certainly intended for Beretta and Chuckie T, what with Chuckie's bouts of chair-swinging madness and the reports stating that Beretta had left an entire year of planned stories on the table when he and Chuckie headed off for All Elite Wrestling, and the fact that the storyline was seemingly abandoned entirely thereafter. However, a bit of Arc Welding can easily be accomplished with KENTA being installed as the "mole" instead. Applying that logic, it's entirely possible that Itami reconnecting with Bálor allowed him to time the resharpening of his fangs in tune with Bullet Club's actions, positioning him to use his prior wrestling soulmate Katsuyori Shibata as an in to eventually get into NJPW upon returning to the Land of the Rising Sun as well as gain an inside track on the CHAOS/Hontai alliance's actions and strategies, which he would pass on to Bullet Club. Thus, he's the mole. Initially this would be through Finn, who it's established in real life has remained in contact with Jay and the Tongans, and who Tama Tonga has affirmed as still being Bullet Club 4 Life, then later on after he left WWE he would be able to speak to someone from BC directly. Ultimately this led to KENTA's arrival in NJPW to take part in the G1 Climax tournament with Shibata's support, only to clinch his massive betrayal on the tournament's final day, with the Guerrillas of Destiny and in particular Tama taking credit for recruiting KENTA. This itself is the final clue which speaks to two ideas: that Tama still has considerable power as Bullet Club's deal maker despite officially ceding the position of frontman/leader to Jay, and that KENTA entering The Club, much like Jay before him, has been in the works for a long time, with the Tongans organizing the new Cutthroat Era version of Bullet Club according to the OG foundation laid by Prince Devitt.
