WMG / British Cryptids

Go To

Guesses as to future cryptids or basises the show could feature:
  • An equid inspired by the Kelpie. A Hippocampus appears at the end of the Woodwose episode, and unlike the other creatures has no corresonding episode (besides being mentioned in the Dregpike ep) - yet. It certainly helps that horse plays a big part in Celtic culture and art.
    • Alternatively (as the Dregpike actually does take its fair share from the kelpie), a terrestrial horse a la Unicorns.
  • A giant bird based off the Boobrie, a shapeshifter that takes the form of a waterbird. Perhaps instead of shapeshifting, it would be a Voice Changeling much like how many birds can mimic sounds.
  • A wildcat, maybe tying in the real-life British Big Cat phenomenon.
  • A bull. There's already going to be a goat episode, and they've done deer, so why not cattle of some kind? Possible inclusions in the episode could include:
    • The Dun Cow myth from Warwickshire, where a giant cow sent by The Fair Folk went on a rampage after having its milk stolen by a witch.
    • The Chillingham Wild Cattle
    • Water Bull of Scottish myth
  • Pigs/Wild Boars
    • Twrch Trwyth, a Giant boar in Arthurian Legend
    • The Beast of Dean, which is said to be a giant boar.
    • Jimmy Squarefoot, a Pig Man from the Isle of Man's folklore
  • A Brutal Bird of Prey inspired by the Cornish Owlman.
  • A Wyvern, with the episode referencing dragon-slaying myths of Medieval times and discoveries of dinosaurs' and pterosaurs' bones. An old illustration of a pterodactyl even appears in the Introduction at the 1:25 point, making a possibility more likely.
  • One of the many aquatic bogeymen of English myth, such as Jenny Greenteeth, Grindylow, or Peg Powler.
    • Perhaps this can be mixed with the below-mentioned Lancaster Perch-Man.
  • A Sea Serpent or any other Sea Monster, of which british folklore has plenty.

Guesses as to mentioned but unseen cryptids so far
Speculate away!

  • The Lancaster Perch-Man (mentioned in the Dregpike episode)
    • Folklore surrounding it could be that of a bogeymen to keep young impressionable minds away from swamps, like the afromentioned Grindylow and Jenny Greenteeth.
  • The Cave Children of Coniston (mentioned in the Introduction's description and seen in a newspaper in "Stag Men")

The Souter Seawolf is actually a giant Odobenid
Odobenidae is the family walruses belong to, of which they are the only living member.... but only in our world.

Perhaps the Souter Seawolf is actually a relative of walruses that has adapted to be more efficient on land, even having longer limbs that can run, and even some fur like fur seals do. And since not all members of the Odobenids had the huge tusks walruses can have, it would explain the lack of them on the Seawolf. All of that could help some certain drunken workers mistake it's species and distort eyewitness accounts.

It would certainly explain why walruses were referenced in the episode so much if the Seawolf ostensibly isn't one.

Guesses for cryptids that will appear in the "European Cryptids" series
  • A dragon - Dragons are pretty much THE european monster.
