Trivia / The Simpsons S 9 E 22 Trash Of The Titans

Go To

  • First Appearance: This episode sees the first appearance of the recurring store Costington's, and by extension Mr. Costington.
  • In Memoriam: This episode was dedicated to Linda McCartney, who appeared alongside her husband Paul in "Lisa the Vegetarian".
  • Magnum Opus Dissonance: While the production team certainly weren't complaining about the episode's winning an Emmy, they were taken aback that it was this particular episode that won it, as most of them thought that if any episode from this season was going to win the award, it would have been "Lisa the Skeptic". The episode's writer, Ian Maxtone-Graham, theorized that it won the award because the episode's closing shot left such a powerful impact on the Academy.
  • Milestone Celebration: This is the 200th episode of the series.
  • The Other Darrin: Bono's line "And tell you when your arse is showing!" from "The Garbage Man" was re-dubbed with a different actor for the "Go Simpsonic" album.
  • Playing Against Type: Steve Martin, typically known for his wacky comedic persona, actually here plays the no-nonsense competent straight man to Homer (though not entirely without his funny moments).
  • What Could Have Been:
    • Originally, Homer was going to run for mayor and run Springfield into the ground. He would eventually become mayor of New Springfield when the town split in half a few seasons later.
    • At one point, the episode was going to end with the whole town being raised up and the rubbish being swept underneath.
    • Milhouse would've had his own verse in "The Garbage Man," hoping the titular service can fix his broken home.
      Milhouse:
Who can take my daddy and my mommy, too?
Make 'em get along like moms and dads are supposed to do?
      The garbage man!
I hope the garbage man can.
      Homer:
      The garbage man can't
But he's got a giant stack of horror comics for you!
