Trivia / The Personal History of David Copperfield

Go To

  • Acting for Two: Morfydd Clark plays both David's mother Clara and his would-be wife Dora, giving his attraction to Dora some serious Oedipal undertones.
  • Creator's Oddball: For Armando Iannucci. Compared to Veep and The Thick of It, both of which were cynical, ruthless, and dark comedies, this film is completely straightforward, has more heart and warmth than his other works, and is even optimistic overall.
  • Late Export for You: Was released in the United States in August 28, 2020, over seven months after it's UK release on January 24.
  • Release Date Change: It was originally supposed to come out in the United States on May 8, 2020, but was pushed back due to the COVID-19 Pandemic. It wound up being released on August 28.
  • Screwed by the Network: The initial U.S. date of May 8, 2020 positioned the film as a counterprogramming play one week after parent company Disney's own Black Widow (The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel, also starring Dev Patel, had flourished alongside another Marvel tentpole). However, the rescheduled date saw Disney instead dumping the film as one of the first mid-pandemic theatrical releases — on the same day, in fact, as another Disney release, The New Mutants. This led to a terrible sub-$2 million box office performance. (The fact that the film had already been released in numerous countries and was thus liable to piracy is likely the reason it wasn't held further.)
