Trivia / Reefer Madness: The Musical

Go To

  • Actor Allusion: Robert Torti shows up in a One-Scene Wonder as a Biblical figure who sings rock and roll with a gaggle of costumed backup dancers, which would be familiar to anyone who's seen the filmed version of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat. It helps that song itself could also bring to mind another rock musical penned by the same duo.
  • Acting for Two: every actor except Jimmy and Mary's, but to be more specific:
    • The Lecturer's actor also plays Jimmy's mom (all stage versions except L.A. run), Jimmy's dad (L.A. run), Mr. Poppy (play), musician (movie), Goatman/Moloch, priest (play), Sally's john (movie), dead old man (play), police officer (play), radio news reporter (play), train ticket seller (all stage versions except L.A. run), prison guard (movie), prosecutor (L.A. run), and President Roosevelt.
    • Ralph's actor also plays Sally's baby (play), Jimmy's lawyer (L.A. run), executioner (play), and Uncle Sam.
    • Jack's actor also plays Jesus (play), judge (L.A. run), and George Washington.
    • Sally's actor also plays Lady Liberty.
    • Mae's actor also plays Jimmy's mom (L.A. run).
  • Billing Displacement: Neve Campbell has higher billing than 3 others with major roles, yet only appears for the malt-shop scene, and a brief cameo in Mary Jane/Mary Lane.
  • Cut Song:
    • There was originally a song & dance number featuring the Dead Old Man that Sally ran over, but it was cut for being too dark, and because a static solo wouldn't have worked as well as the more visually interesting Mary Jane/Mary Lane, a song written specifically for the movie. However, the song is still present on the soundtrack for the original LA cast recording.
    • Among other cut songs were The Monkey Song, in which Jimmy wrestles with a literal monkey on his back (this song was replaced in the Off-Broadway version with The Brownie Song, which made it into the movie), a final reprise of the title song where all the deceased characters sing about how marijuana has ruined their lives, We Know Best, sung by Jimmy's parents, and The Trial, where Jimmy is sentenced to death. All four of these songs are also on the LA cast recording.
    • Other songs that didn't make it into the film, but are still in the stage show include:
      • Lullaby, sung by Sally's Baby (played by the same actor that plays Ralph), lamenting on how she sold him for drug money.
      • Act One Finale: Jimmy goes on the run and Mary goes in search of him while Jack plans to return him to the Reefer Den, possibly by force.
      • Jimmy On The Lam: Jimmy goes to a train station to skip town. Act One Finale and Jimmy On The Lam were cut from the film since it didn't need two acts.
      • Reprises of Down at the Ol' Five and Dime and Listen to Jesus Jimmy, both cut due to pacing along with Lullaby.
  • Dawson Casting: When the film came out, Christian Campbell and Kristen Bell were 33 and 25 respectively, both playing 16 year old high school students. This trope can be justified since the original 1930's Reefer Madness they're making fun of also had obvious Dawson casting.
  • Meaningful Release Date: The film premiered on Saturday, April 20, 2005.
  • Real-Life Relative: Christian Campbell as Jimmy appears onscreen with his sister Neve Campbell as the waitress in the local diner, though their characters are (apparently) not related.
