  • Actor Allusion:
    • During a dinner involving Max's ex & his new girlfriend/fiancé, Regine comments that she looks familiar and asks her where she went to school. When she mentions that it's a small private school called Eastland, Regine quips that she's 'never heard of it' and shoots a quick glance to camera as she walks away.
    • Later at dinner, while telling Blatant Lies to make Max seem more successful to her ex-beau, its mentioned that Max has made partner at her firm, the first African American woman to do so, "because that Clair Huxtable wasn't real."
    • Melvin and Mario Van Peebles play a father and son in "Likes Father, Likes Son".
    • In the episode where the girls get robbed, Khadijah puts out the idea of getting a gun for protection, to the consternation of everyone else; In Set It Off, Queen Latifah's character, Cleo, is the first to put out the same idea, only this time to do the robbing instead of defending against it.
  • Actor-Shared Background: John Henton was born and raised in Cleveland just like Overton.
  • Dueling Shows: With Friends - Both feature six friends living and working in New York, both have characters that are originally just shallow and fashion-oriented, both have formerly fat characters, both have characters seen in universe as a Cloudcuckoolander - and while Friends went on to, ultimately, be more popular it was, Living Single premiered first - a year earlier in fact.
  • Keep Circulating the Tapes: Finally averted in 2017, ten years after the first season was released on DVD. The entire series has been released on DVD and is also set to be streamed on Hulu; it's also being aired on Bounce, TVOne, and VH1.
  • Real-Life Relative:
    • Khadijah's mother was played by Queen Latifah's real mother. Averted with her baby half-sister and her father.
    • Regine's mother is played by Kim Fields' real mother Chip Fields.
  • What Could Have Been: The series was originally pitched to NBC, who rejected it. Yet, they did greenlight that other show in NYC about six single friends...
  • Working Title: My Girls.
