Trivia / Awful Hospital

Go To

  • Ascended Fanon:
    • Bogleech created unplanned scenes based on received comments, such as a conversation with a door.
    • According to the man himself, Joe and Flair's (strongly implied) BDSM relationship is this.
Fan canons already existed that they had a relationship like that and it really only seems natural.
  • Color-Coded for Your Convenience: A helpful list of everything in Fern's distinct shade of green: Fern herself, the Birthday Cake (when it fell 'ill,') the Gasworm… and though we've yet to see him, Fern's verbal description of her son makes it plain he's this color as well.
    • This also seems to be the case with the parliament, as they're consistently associated with a blood red version of the mother's splotches. The objects shown so far with this pattern is the background of the Parliament themselves, Redbert in his first appearance, the background of the "HELLO FREMB" page, and the Slobs.
  • Development Gag: At one point, a zone called the Gorehouse is mentioned offhandedly by a character. The original setting of the Noisy Tenant Universe was, according to Bog, called 'Gore Haus'.
  • Fandom Nod:
    • The 'Inert Vessel's' designation code: (MG-0908-BN/SK/HL-3900438093990.) Here's the significance of all those numbers and letters spelled out by the author, himself.
Bogleech: Miss Green - September 8 - Broken Neck/Skeleton/Hospital Laboratory/ bunch of random numbers maybe related to how many corpses were processed that day (not necessarily all hers.) That's not really the "canon" meaning of the designation code, just how I picked it. Its meaning to Dr. Balmer is probably something that wouldn't translate.
    • Much later, the Dack gets a little nod.
Parliamentary Description Of A Worn-Out Boot: FUNCTION THEORY: MODULAR CRANIAL EXOSHELL FOR GREY RANGE ORGANISM, POSSIBLY "DACK."
  • Teasing Creator: Scythemantis/Bogleech has made an habit of playfully trolling the commenters's expectations.
  • What Could Have Been:
    • Originally, The Morgue was going to be a single contained room within The Hospital. Then the author's imagination went into overdrive, until The Morgue became its own zone.
    • Had the Commentators not taken the shortcut through Celia's woods, they would've missed out on gaining Celia as a companion!
Bogleech: I can confirm that user comments inspired whole long segments of events that would not have happened otherwise, and in fact, I didn't have a perfectly clear plan of what would happen in what order. We could in fact have missed out on joining with Celia or even ever actually meeting Balmer if we took some different paths, but they would have factored in later, in a different way, probably.
    • Even if Fern hadn't decided to shrode Crash, it wouldn't have prevented a boss battle from happening near the end of Chapter Three. It just would've been something different than Final Jayslob and Crashslob.
Commentator: I hate to say it, but at this point I'm wondering if, pragmatically speaking, it would have been better to have followed Crash's plan to the letter. Don't get me wrong, I still think schroding him was the right idea from a "moral" standpoint, I'm just pointing out that if we didn't do that, we might not have had to fight both Final Jayslob and now Crash.
Another Commentator: I'm sure some other complication would have arisen. What's an arc like this without a boss fight?
Bogleech: Yeah, I'd have come up with a different boss!
    • Bogleech stated that he "flipped a coin" in order to determine whether the Jayslob would die quietly at the end of his fight with Fern, or if he'd manage one last death-throe attack that would've killed Fern too.
    • Bogleech had always intended to have Willis be Fern's companion, but the idea of him being Dr. Tori's son came later. Originally, he was slated to be thrown away by the surgeons as biological waste, and Fern would've had to rescue him!
    • The Minor Character Spotlights intermission page is full of reveals such as this; they include the fact that Laceynote  and Bloodstain were originally intended to be hostile monsters before player feedback made them friendly, and that Angus Cobbnote  was, in a similar vein, supposed to be an injured version of an enemy type that, unable to fight, set up an item shop instead.note
    • Had the Commentators not gone for the System Restore quest first, Chip's Sanity Slippage would have brought him to the same level of madness as Crash by the middle of whichever quest was chosen second.
    • Had the Commentators chosen the Library quest instead of the System Restore quest, Willis and Isaac would have retroactively been elsewhere.
    • The Library quest's cover page depicts Cheryl standing on top of a Brainwashed and Crazy Professor Lexicovermus, with an Evil Laugh, chasing after Isaac and Willis. However, Word of God says from the very beginning that it's only one out of many options for what might happen, making it almost a case of Covers Always Lie.
  • Word of Gay: Clarifying that Celia's ex and the source of her Tragic Keepsake hat is a female bacterian.
  • Word of God:
    • When people started to wonder who Fern's baby's father was, the author said that Ms. Green was a single parent, and that the father wasn't important and wouldn't be plot relevant.
Bogleech: I made a decision early on to never bring him into the plot. There's already tons of things out there about a single dad with a kid where the mom is never even fleetingly mentioned so I thought it was fair, especially since I knew so many single moms growing up and the fathers of their kids were never a subject any of them even mentioned or cared about. My assumption was always that she had a brief experimental relationship, decided she wasn't interested in relationships at all, but decided to keep an accidental kid.
    • According to the author, Fern's actually quite dark-haired under all that green!
Bogleech: Her hair would actually be more of a blackish!
    • As stated by Bogleech, Willis is the equivalent of 10 to 12 years old in Greyzone years.
  • Word Salad Title: During one of the webcomic's anniversary celebrations, Bogleech finally explained where he got "Noisy Tenant" from. "Noisy" plays off the "Silent" of Silent Hill, while "Tenant" is meant to be like the "Resident" of Resident Evil.
