Tear Jerker / LA By Night

Go To

As a game about personal horror, Vampire: the Masquerade is bound to deliver tearjerkers. The skill of the players adds a lot to the more dramatic moments.

Season 1

  • Annabelle's reaction to finding out what she is and how the Kindred society operates.
  • The fact that Victor had to cut ties with his family to protect them, which made them resent him.
  • In the second episode of season one, when Jasper tells Annabelle it's dangerous to keep mortals close, her response is this.
Annabelle: I'm sorry you lost someone.
  • Annabelle's reaction to seeing her sire in the crowd. She starts crying and hitting him, using all her vampire strength.
  • The Reveal that Annabelle would die if she wasn't Embraced.
  • Annabelle trying to save a Thin-Blood from Victor's frenzied rage. She fails.
  • In Jasper's epilogue to season one, he observes his ex-girlfriend who thinks he's dead. He remains invisible, watching her casually talk to her friend, but he can't resist and writes her a note, which urges her to move on with her life. Chloe recognizes his writing and breaks down in tears.
Jasper: Sorry for listening, but I happened to be sitting nearby and while your friend may not understand what you're feeling, she is right. You should have somewhere to come home to and you should move forward. Sorry for listening. Again.
  • In Nelli's epilogue, she meets the leader of vampire hunters. After his comrades were taken by vampires he has nothing to live for and begs her for death. She makes him her ghoul.
  • In Victor's epilogue, he and Ib make plans for the future, but they are cut short when she is called back to her master. Victor begs Fiorenza not to take her, but she doesn't care.
    • In the same episode, Ib is briefly able to speak freely and tells Victor she is suicidal and how being a ghoul made her miserable.
  • In Annabelle's epilogue, she has to choose how to deal with her connection to the mortal world - Ellenore, her girlfriend. The only two options she has that allow her to continue being with Ellenore safely are either Embracing her or making her a ghoul. Ellenore tries to convince her to Embrace her and her Anguished Declaration of Love is the biggest Tearjerker moment of the season.
Ellenore: I'd walk through the Nine Hells for you. I'd walk through the Nine Hells with you.

Season 2

  • Solomon's death. Even though he didn't get a lot of screentime, he seemed like a good person. The Tearjerker factor is doubled by everyone's reactions and how it represents Nelli's Sanity Slippage.
  • Over the beginning of the season, the deterioration of the Coterie's bond. In the first season, Nellie and Victor act as a set of caring Parental Substitute to Annabelle and (to a lesser extent) Jasper, whereas the amount of lies and impulsive actions of both are causing serious tension. At points, Jasper speaks to both with audible contempt.
  • Victor stating that he is torn between the fact he would die for Nelli but also that he should kill her for what she's done by working with the Second Inquisition.
  • Nelli's Skyward Scream when she's freed from having a stake through her heart. The revelation it's not because of her isolation and injury but the kidnapping of her sister makes it much worse.
  • The Humiliation Conga that Victor is put through by the other Barons that culminates in giving a good chunk of the Valley to Fiona.
    • It gets even worse when you realize they weren't listening to his reasonable plans or explanations and planned this from the very beginning.

Season 3

  • In the first episode of the new season, Victor's nightclub, which has acted as a home base for the Vamily and multiple other kindred, is firebombed and destroyed. Nothing Is the Same Anymore.
    • The description of the Vamily being forced to make a dash outside into the sun is pretty devastating, as it is the biggest reflection on what they all (but especially Jasper and Annabelle) have lost. The sunlight is hypnotically beautiful to the group who haven't seen it in so long... and then it touches them and starts to burn "and it's awful."
  • Jasper's response after being rescued and potentially having multiple people either die or be seriously injured on his behalf is hysterical laughter, as if he could be worthy of such a price.

Season Four

  • X turns against Annabelle and crushes her spirit by attempting to diablerize her for power. It's doubly traumatizing for her because she and X were very close. In the end, while she survives, she ends up fleeing into the night via Celerity.

Season Five

  • X has been cursed by the Second Inquisition and decides to go into torpor underwater in order to hopefully again to rise again some day.
  • Eva commits Suicide by Sunlight after giving over all of the information she has on the vampire race to the Second Inquisition.
  • The final denouement ends with the Coterie divided, and its unlikely they'll reconcile. Annabelle goes to New York to continue the Anarch fight, having realised she's unable to settle now the Camerilla are gone. Nelli and Victor are at odds due to their differing views on ruling over L.A. as Barons (Victor wants to unite the Anarchs against future threats, but Nelli just sees this as an attempt to take over). Jasper is sick of carrying out Kindred dirty work and just wants to be left alone, having lost both X and Eva.
