Unico doesn't like seeing Beezle being alone (even if he refuses to admit it).

While the original Unico manga was already one of Osamu Tezuka's most melancholy and heartwrenching works, a feature-film adaptation by Sanrio would only manage to increase the sadness factor of the depressing life of the titular baby unicorn.

Warning: per wiki policy, Tear Jerker pages are Spoilers Off.

  • The first couple of minutes shows Unico frightened and sad after waking up in an unknown location. Unico begins sobbing due to loneliness.
Unico: I'm lonesome! (starts crying with his head down)
  • After Unico rejects Beezle on giving his horn for the third time. The little imp runs as far away from Unico as possible and adjusts his role as The Demon of Solitude. However, Unico quietly watches on and starts shedding tears not only for Beezle refusing to be his friend but also because he feels sorry for Beezle's lonely role.
  • While Unico and Chao/Katy are riding on a basket on a river. She decides to have a conversation with Unico about being abandoned and lonely when she suddenly starts to cry into Unico's arms. At first, she tells Unico that she didn't get abandoned until she quickly breaks down in the process. Unico responds by gently hugging her back. The original manga version of Unico hugging Katy is just as heart-wrenching.
Unico: Hmm? Were you abandoned here too?
Chao/Katy: Well of all the nerve? Who in there right mind would abandon a beautiful kitty like me? (gets choked up)
Unico: What's the matter?
Chao/Katy: (breaking down) It... it... it's true! [starts crying into Unico's arms] I was abandoned! [continues crying]
  • In the end, Unico must leave with the West Wind and forget Katy and Beezle forever. After Katy starts crying in relief that The Old Lady is alright, she asks her where Unico was at. The Old Women tells her that "Unicorns are forbidden to stay with a certain person for a long period" which causes Katy to look up in the sky in complete sadness. Her tears of relief suddenly becomes tears of sadness as she starts crying after learning she won't be seeing her friend again. She then starts hopelessly yelling Unico's name into the sky hoping he hears her voice for the last time.
    • When Beezle notices the West Wind carrying Unico away, he's very upset and starts yelling at the West Wind to bring Unico back. Unico can only sadly watch on as he uses his powers to give Beezle a new horn before saying goodbye to Beezle and Katy. Unlike the beginning, Beezle doesn't care that he's given a new horn and just wants Unico to come back. After Unico hears Katy's cries, the film ends with Unico wistfully looking down as the West Wind is taking the foal to a different location which carries over to the end credits.
  • And just before this, Katy and Beezle plead that Unico not die. When the two notice that he's not waking up, Katy begins crying as her tears start falling onto Unico's entire body while Beezle is quietly weeping. Beezle is so distraught that he decides to remove his horn that Unico gave him early in the film and puts it onto Unico's head in the hopes of bringing him back to life.
