Yusuke stakes out Tarukane's estate as Hiei has been targeting his men. When Hiei appears the two battle only for Hiei to win. As neither Tarukane nor Yukina are there, Hiei leaves.
Looking to train Yusuke, Botan takes him to see Master Genkai to learn the spirit wave. Kuwabara choises to come with. Genkai starts training Yusuke while Kuwabara is tasked with cutting a boulder with a wooden sword. After a few weeks of training, Kuwabara awakens his spirit sword, slicing the boulder clean in half. This motivates Yusuke to train harder. When they leave, Genkai grants Yusuke the spirit wave orb.
At Sakyo's island, Tarukane arrives with Yukina. He witnesses Younger Toguro kill a large yokai and Sakyo tells him he is his new bodyguard. Soon it is discovered that Yukina is missing. A guard rushes her to the helicopter but is slain by Elder Toguro. Yukina is recaptured and Tarukane collects her tears.
As Hiei, Younger Toguro kidnaps Keiko after Yusuke returns. Yusuke then attacks Hiei but the par are stopped by Kurama, who reveals the truth to them. Later joined by Kuwabara, the four of them set out for Sakyo's island. Unbeknownst to them, Younger Toguro fights and kills Genkai.

- Adaptation Amalgamation: The Genkai tournament is cut, with Genkai simply training the boys when Botan brings them and Kuwabara learning his spirit sword by attacking a boulder. Yusuke only trains with her for one stay before she gives him her spirit wave orb. In the original, Yusuke entered the tournament to find the Human Hunter Rando, with the training done off screen and voluntarily returns before the Dark Tournament, gaining the spirit wave orb in the later half of the arc. It also mixes the Rescue Yukina arc and Dark Tournament arc, with Hiei's kidnapping of Keiko in the Artifacts of Darkness arc done by Elder Toguro with Hiei's apparance.
- Challenge Seeker: Younger Toguro wishes to go to the demon realm because nobody is left on Earth who can fight him, so he aids Sakyo's goal of opening a portal.
- Curb-Stomp Battle: Hiei makes quick work of the guards and defeats Yusuke without needing to unsheathe his sword.
- Defiant Captive: Keiko won't stop struggling, even as two men hold her down until she is knocked out.
- Determinator: Kuwabara refuses to give up his seemingly impossible task of cutting the bolder, eventually awakening his spirit sword.
- Doomed by Canon: The guard who shows pity on Yukina. In the original he only appeared in a flashback, with Tarukane having him gunned down for betraying him. He doesn't far any better here, killed by Elder Toguro while trying to escape with Yukina.
- Enemy Mine: Downplayed. Yusuke and Hiei stop fighting after finding out the people who have Keiko also have Yukina and they leave for the island together.
- False Flag Operation: Elder Toguro impersonates Hiei and kidnaps Keiko, promting Yusuke to go after Hiei with a vengeance.
- Hate at First Sight: Hiei wastes no time belittling Kuwabara after meeting him.
- I Have Your Wife: Elder Toguro kidnaps Keiko to rile Yusuke up and have him fight his brother. After distracting him with Hiei for a while, Sakyo sends an invitation and transport to his island.
- Let's You and Him Fight: Elder Toguro frames Hiei for Keiko's kidnapping, prompting Yusuke to go after him.
- Locked Outof The Loop: Kuwabara was absent during the discussion of Keiko and Yukina's kidnapping, showing up on the way to the boat, and leaving him unaware of Yukina or her connection to Hiei.
- Mentor Occupational Hazard: After Genkai trains Yusuke and sends him on his way she is killed by Younger Togoru.
- Nominal Hero: Invoked by Yusuke, who says he became the spirit detective because it was part of the deal. Genkai sees this as an excuse to hide behind, asking if he thinks Koenma would really drag him back to the afterlife if he refuses to do his job.
- She Is Not My Girlfriend: Kurama refers to Keiko as Yusuke's girlfriend, which he denies.
- Training from Hell: Genkai subjects both Yusuke and Kuwabara to this, with Kuwabara made to cut a boulder with a wooden sword while Genkai fights Yukina or makes him balance on his finger for hours on end.
- The Unmasking: After Keiko slaps him, Elder Togoru reverts to his true form, not that she knows who he or Hiei are but the process itself is disturbing.
- Vehicle Vanish: Hiei/Elder Togoru pulls this off after kidnapping Keiko, staring down Yusuke until a car drives between them.
- Your Princess Is in Another Castle!: By the time Hiei tracks down Tarukane's estate Yukina had already been moved to Sakyo's island.
