The son of a family acquainted with Elizabeth unexpectedly returns after years of being missing. Elizabeth has her doubts and questions the authenticity of the man’s claims. Neal takes on the identity of the family’s butler, going undercover to uncover the truth.


Tropes:

  • Absence of Evidence. Neal tries to get some fingerprints from “Patrick” but is unable to find any since he swiped all surfaces, which is another clue that he has something to hide.
  • Don't Call Me "Sir": Stanton, the Wolcott family’s butler, calls Elizabeth “Mrs. Burke,” and she tells him he can call her by her first name.
  • Drives Like Crazy: Neal sits on the driver’s seat of Peter’s car when it is announced over radio that Keith as escaped his tail and is trying to escape in the area. Peter tells him to switch seats but Neal ignores him and drives so fast that Peter wants to look away.
  • The Easy Way or the Hard Way: Keith asks Patrick what happened in Düsseldorf. Patrick naturally has no answer and Keith threatens to get the answer the hard way, threatening him with a taser.
  • Evil-Detecting Dog: Chauncey, the family’s dog, is clearly uncomfortable in Keith’s presence and repeatedly growls at him, hinting at his true identity.
  • Fake Nationality: In universe, Peter pretends to be a polish mobster threatening him so that Keith leads them to Patrick when he tries to find out why the “Pole” is after Patrick, attempting to maintain his deception.
  • Feigning Healthiness: Peter at first claims that he “hasn’t been sick since 1996” and brushes off his flu symptoms as part of his allergy.
  • Fun with Acronyms:
    • Elizabeth wants to know how Neal stole “Patrick’s” cuff links. His answer: PDA:
      Neal: Proximity manipulation. Diversion technique. Attention control.
    • When the fingerprint on the cuff link returns back inconclusive:
      Peter: Return the cuff link and try my technique. G.A.F.
      Neal: G.A.F.
      Peter: Grab a fork.
  • Healing Potion: Mozzie creates an obscure “medication”, made among others from honey from his newly acquired bees, attempting to cure Peter’s flu. Surprisingly, it seems so work.
    Mozzie: 18 amino acids packed into an antimicrobial, flavonoid-filled, honey-based tonic that will rid you of your symptoms and also cure warts, elevate your mood, and enhance performance.
  • Hot Drink Cure: Elizabeth gives Peter a herbal tea to drink to help with his flu symptoms.
  • Illness Blanket: After Peter is sent home by Jones, we see him lying on his couch wrapped in a blanket.
  • The Infiltration: Neal goes undercover as a butler in order to find out whether the man really is Patrick and expose the impostor.
  • Out-of-Character Alert: Elizabeth gets suspicious when “Patrick” wants to buy a Picasso since she knows that he actually hates his work.
  • Scary Stinging Swarm: When Mozzie suggests to house several beehives on Neal’s terrace and asks what the danger is, Neal brings up the potential of swarms.
  • Vomit Chain Reaction: Downplayed. The other agents start gagging when they hear Peter throwing up, but no one else actually starts to vomit.
  • Vomit Discretion Shot: Peter throws up in the trash can in his office, prompting Jones to send him home.
