Recap / Wakfu S1E20 "The Tree of Life"

Go To

With Sadlygrove missing and Ruel imprisoned, things look bleak for the remaining members. Since Armand is against them, Amalia and Eva, with the help of the Bonta ambassador Joris, decide to sneak into the shrine where the Tree of Life is kept to see if they can awake the Sadida King. However....

Tropes:

  • All Just a Dream: A good part of Eva's journey is actually an illusion cast by the Tree of Life.
  • Ambadassador: Joris is the official envoy of the King of Bonta in the Sadida Kingdom. He also happens to be a Pint-Sized Powerhouse able to take down an entire garrison of trained soldiers alone.
  • Call-Back:
    • Ruel uses his own havresac and recall potions to escape from prison.
    • It is revealed that the Tree of Life is currently suffering from a Heroic BSoD because of the death of his good friend, the Soft Oak.
  • Comically Missing the Point: When Ruel sees a carved bounty poster of himself in his cell he acts extremely offended... before pulling out a sharpened bone to add one more zero to the bounty.
  • Continuity Nod: In his cell, Ruel spots a bounty poster for the Black Crow, commenting that maybe he should have tried to apprehend him after all.
  • Creepy Good:
    • Joris is a small hooded figure who's face is shrouded in pitch-black darkness, safe for the eyes and nose, but is a hero of the World of Twelve.
    • The Tree of Life manifests as a small, creepy doll with gaping white eyes and "hair" made of twigs, but it's a force of goodness.
  • Early-Bird Cameo: Though she goes unnamed in the episode and it's actually a younger version of her, this is the first glimpse of Eva's sister Cleophelia before her actual introduction in Season 2.
  • Familiar: Ruel ultimately gets over the past and accepts the small Dhreller pup who had been following him since episode 17 as his new familiar, Kamasutar Jr.
  • Foreshadowing: The odd doll Eva sees standing on the root of the Tree of Life is the avatar of the Tree.
  • Freudian Excuse: Eventually, Ruel reveals that he cannot stand the small Dhreller following him because he reminds him of his cherished former pet Kamasutar, whose death made him miserable for a very long time. Talking about it and having said Dhreller help him escape allow Ruel to recover and accept him as his new familiar and pet.
  • Getting Eaten Is Harmless: Ruel's bag is enchanted to eat and spit out people who handle it without permission.
  • Heel Realization: Downplayed, but after escaping to his home with the last recall potion, Ruel sees the Tofu feather given to each member of the Brotherhood of Tofu. Upon seeing it and realizing that he left all of them alone, Ruel becomes determined to rejoin them.
  • Lotus-Eater Machine: The Tree of Life tries to put Eva in a happy fantasy when she's reunited with Sadlygrove, the King has recovered, the Brotherhood reunited and even Amalia's Missing Mom appears. Eva ultimately rejects all of this and talks the Tree out of his current BSoD.
  • Love Epiphany: The Tree of Life's fantasy acts as a catalyst to making Eva realize how she truly feels about Sadlygrove.
  • Missed Him by That Much: Amalia goes to find Ruel so he can be freed after she's finally told her father about what's happening, only for him to have just escaped by using a recall potion.
  • Reasonable Authority Figure: King Sheran Sharm, once awakened, believes Amalia and orders Armand to prepare his kingdom for War.
  • Tricked-Out Shoes: The thick sole of one of Ruel's wooden sandals is revealed to be hollow and hide some useful knick-knacks.
  • World Tree: Downplayed example, the Tree of Life is a special tree covered in lights, each of them representing a living Sadida. Should the tree die, all the Sadida will perish along with it.
