Go To

  • Date First Aired: 08/09/1992

After a bizarre dream where everything goes wrong for her, Bill wakes up to find that she's still unemployed and alone at home. Whilst Bill annoys one of Jenny's mates, Farty the dog gets in the garden. He will become important later. Meanwhile, a replacement for Gerry, Ben's old assistant, is found. It's Christine, the meat seller from several episodes back.

After going through a rambling phone call with her mother, Bill tries to get signed on in employment. Unfortunately, a series of events conspire to make her late - first, her car breaks down and Anneka Rice herself lures over the one mechanic who could help her with her solution. After a lot of work required to get to the office, Bill gets annoyed by a woman trying to give her help in this area, although she does manage to give her advice on where to go next.

On the bright side, Rona manages to get Bill a job at one of her caterers for airline meals. Unfortunately, this leaves her too exhausted to do anything, and this includes missing an important news broadcast revealing that her mysterious biker friend has been killed in an accident.

Tropes in this episode:

  • As Herself: Anneka Rice pops up as herself as part of the reference to Challenge: Anneka.
  • Bedmate Reveal: Bill realizes that (seemingly at first) she has finally had an affair with Angelo when she wakes up in bed with him.
  • Blackmail: Christine manages to threaten the Rich Bitch into giving them a cheque by threatening to tell her friends that one of her paintings is a fake.
  • Contrived Coincidence: Out of all things, Anneka Rice shows up and takes the one mechanic who could help Bill with her car trouble.
  • Dream Intro: The episode begins with Bill seemingly having finally cheated on Ben with Angelo. Things proceed to get stranger from there, with Rona deciding to become a nun, Jenny now going out with a new boy called Phlegm, David wielding a gun from Sammy (and Ben being heavily implied to have shot Angelo with it), and a man coming to install Sky TV. After a good scream from her, it is only then that it's revealed to all be a dream that she's having.
  • Elvis Lives: According to the newspapers at least, he's alive and working at Alton Towers, although Bill doubts it.
  • Foreshadowing: During the Dream Intro, when Ben first enters, he sarcastically states if Bill was expecting Anneka Rice. Rice later appears in the flesh needing a mechanic and there is even an extended scene that references one of her most famous shows, Challenge: Anneka.
  • Gasshole: Farty the Dog (real name Rufus), so nicknamed from David because he farts when he barks. We even get to see it fart.
  • Given Name Reveal: The mysterious biker has actually gone unnamed up to this episode, where his name is given as Angelo Shepherd.
  • Ignored Vital News Reports: Thanks to her new shifts, Bill has fallen asleep by the time a news report revealing that her mysterious motorcyclist friend has died in an accident comes and goes.
  • Killed Off for Real: Angelo, Bill's mysterious friend from last series, is revealed to have died in a motorcycle accident.
  • Killed Offscreen: We only find out that Angelo has died through a news report that Ben sees.
  • Mistaken for Gay: The Rich Bitch in this episode mistakenly thinks that Christine is a lesbian.
  • My Car Hates Me: Bill's car manages to break down just when she needs it to sign on.
  • Nightmare Sequence: The dream that Bill suffers from in the opening, which has all her worst fears come true. It even ends with her screaming.
  • Not Used to Freedom: A variation - Bill has quit her job and technically doesn't have any obligations to go to work anymore, but this has led to her having nothing to do
  • Put on a Bus: After having appeared since "Leader of the Pack", it's revealed that Gerry has been replaced by Christine (the meat seller from "When the Going Gets Tough, the Tough Go Shopping").
  • Rich Bitch: The woman who Bill has to plumb for is an uptight rich woman who refuses to give them compensation for several hours of work.
  • Scatterbrained Senior: The person who Bill manages to get to assist with her car trouble is an elderly person who doesn't quite understand when to release the clutch.
  • Shout-Out:
    • Bill briefly watches Neighbours, then looks at a VHS of Home Alone.
    • Bill's attempts to find someone to help with her car quickly turns into a lengthy reference to Challenge: Annika.
  • Take That!: Someone coming in to install Sky is treated as the absolute low point of Bill's nightmare. It's also a Continuity Nod to an earlier episode where she concluded that Rona's Swedish boyfriend Sven agreeing with wanting Sky TV is a sign that he doesn't understand any English.
  • Tempting Fate:
    • Bill at the end of the Dream Intro:
Bill: Oh my god! This can't get any worse!
David: Mum, the man's come to install Sky TV.
    • At the end of the episode, Ben finds Bill sleeping and hopes that she will sleep well. Cue a shot of Bette preparing to call her late in the night.
