Recap / Tuttle Twins S 1 E 8 Wonky Wages

Go To

Summary: Why doesn’t everyone get equal pay? Ethan and Emily travel back in time to visit people like Babe Ruth, and learn about the economic value that people provide, and the dangers of communism.

This episode contains the following tropes:

  • An Aesop: Equal pay regardless of a worker's value may sound like a good idea, but it results in loss of skilled workers, which in turn brings down whole companies and even countries. Fair pay doesn't mean equal pay.
  • Anachronistic Animal: Gabby reveals that she found her first "Derek" as a child in Cuba. Raccoons went extinct in Cuba in the 17th century.
  • Dark and Troubled Past: This episode reveals that Grandma Gabby grew up in Cuba, and her family fled the country after communism destroyed it.
  • Even the Rats Won't Touch It: Derek finds Cuba's garbage too rancid—especially the Communist Manifesto.
  • Groin Attack: Ethan shoots a baseball at the Cuban soldiers using Derek as a launcher. It hits a soldier in the groin.
  • Hairstyle Inertia: Five-year-old Gabby has the same hairstyle as 85-year-old Gabby.
  • Historical Domain Character: Babe Ruth teaches the kids about the economic value of a skilled baseball player versus an unskilled player.
  • Renaissance Man: Deconstructed. Gabby's friend Rafael is forced to be one because simply being a doctor doesn't pay enough in Cuba. So he also drives taxis and does other jobs in order to make ends meet.
  • Replacement Goldfish: Grandma Gabby has had a lot of "Dereks" over the years.
  • Parental Bonus: Copernicus says his mom drinks some "courage" every night after he goes to bed.
  • Parody Product Placement: Played with. Wonky's toy factory is an obvious parody of Willy Wonka, lampshaded by the kids. Gabby then uses this to segue into a fourth-wall-breaking advertisement for the Tuttle Twins online store.
Grandma Gabby: [Wonky] will make us rich through merchandising. (to the audience) Everything you see in the next 20 minutes can potentially be sold as a toy! gasp Is that a Derek backpack?!
