Recap / Tuttle Twins S 1 E 9 Dumpsters And Disobedience

Go To

Summary: Ethan and Emily’s film set gets shut down because of a dumb regulation. The twins learn about civilly disobeying unjust laws with the help of Rosa Parks and a funny Boat-Dweller named Doug.

This episode contains the following tropes:

  • An Aesop: "Sometimes it's okay to civilly disobey."
  • Affectionate Parody: Dark Dumpster Derek is an obvious parody of Batman.
  • Amateur Film-Making Plot: The twins are trying to film a show for a youth film festival when they're told that it's illegal in their town for anyone under 16 to run a film set. They have to decide whether it's worth the fine to continue filming.
  • The Diva: Karinne demands to know why she's Raccoon #2 and who Raccoon #1 is. Later, Derek briefly becomes a diva after he drinks the knowledge juice.
  • Historical Domain Character: Gabby lets the twins borrow Alfred Hitchcock to learn some tips on making a movie. Later, the twins and Gabby visit Rosa Parks and whisk her away for a break from jail to watch Susan B. Anthony and Harriet Tubman at work.
  • Imagine Spot: When the twins are told it's illegal for them to film in town, they imagine themselves in jail next to a huge convict.
  • Mood Whiplash: The episode goes from Emily joking with Susan B. Anthony about the right to run for president vs. the desire to do so, to watching Harriet Tubman escort escaped slaves through the woods while being chased by a mob. One man even has visible scars on his body. The mood then shifts back to comedic as the Tuttles return to Montgomery and Derek drinks the knowledge juice.
  • Show Within a Show: Ethan and Emily are making a film called "Dark Dumpster Derek."
  • Sudden Intelligence: Derek drinks the knowledge juice and suddenly gains the ability to speak full sentences in English—with a posh English accent to match.
  • The Suffragette: The twins meet the queen of the women's suffrage movement, Susan B. Anthony.
