Recap / The Odd Couple (1970) S1 ^E11 "Felix Is Missing"

Go To

Felix goes to Canada for a photo shoot, leaving Oscar a note. However, Oscar sets a beer can down on it, and when the police start to question Felix's absence, he has no luck convincing them of the truth. With Felix snowbound and unable to return or even contact the outside world, the situation quickly spins out of control.

This episode includes examples of the following tropes:

  • Death Notification: When Murray comes in response to Oscar's summons, the police have already found a body with Felix's wallet, leading him to believe he has to break the tragic news to Oscar.
  • Faint in Shock: Vinnie starts feeling faint when the poker players and Oscar go into the morgue to identify Felix's body. One of the officers dismissively says he looked like a fainter and orders him taken out.
  • Identifying the Body: Felix goes missing and Murray eventually manages to ask Oscar to come down to the morgue to identify a body he thinks is Felix. Oscar is subdued with grief until he sees the body, whereupon he's shocked that they could actually think the guy was Felix. (The police had "identified" the body by the wallet.)
  • I'll Kill You!: Oscar's habit of making comments like this becomes a plot point. When Felix disappears, the police fix on Oscar as the most likely suspect due to all his "threats."
  • Ironic Echo Cut: Multiple times, the show cuts from the guys talking about Felix (usually worrying about him) to his situation being snowbound with two beautiful models.
  • Lap Pillow: Felix lies down with his head in one of the models' lap.
  • Nepotism: The man in charge of the photo shoot apparently got his position because his father owns the company. However, he insists that it's also because he's very "happening".
  • Never Say "Die": Murray is reluctant to come out and ask Oscar to come down and identify what he thinks is Felix's body. When pressed for what's going on, he says, "He's in the morgue!"
  • O.O.C. Is Serious Business: Oscar worries about Felix's disappearance especially because a model called him and claimed she and Felix had an appointment Thursday. Felix never breaks an appointment.
  • Poor Communication Kills: The entirety of Oscar's story happens because he accidentally loses the note Felix penned informing him about the job, thus making it seem like Felix just vanished.
  • Snowed-In: Felix gets an offer to do a photo shoot in Canada. Unfortunately, the weather happens to pick that time to dump a bunch of snow in the area, preventing Felix from coming home.
  • Tempting Fate: After the police sergeant has told him he's the prime suspect, Oscar tries to reassure himself by noting that he didn't tell him not to go anywhere. The door opens for the sergeant to tell him that.
