Recap / The Lion Guard S 2 E 17 The Scorpions Sting

Go To

Summary: After Simba is stung by a scorpion, the Guard must travel to the Outlands to find the cure.

This episode contains examples of:

  • Batman Gambit:
    • Scar's entire plan hinged on the Guard heading to the Outlands and taking out his minions along the way. He even counted on Kion using the Roar to escape, but he didn't count on Kion focusing the roar directly on his enemies.
    • Fuli even realizes the crocodile, jackal and hyena invasions were all planned by Scar.
  • Best Served Cold: Scar's revenge on Simba.
  • The Bus Came Back: After being absent for most of Season 2, Mzingo returns having joined Scar's Legion of Doom.
  • Call-Back: Fuli brings up the crocodile, hyena and jackal invasions they faced, realizing they have all been planned by Scar.
  • The Cameo: Kenge appears among Scar's minions when they corner the Guard and Makini at the volcano.
  • Chekhov's Skill: In "Never Roar Again", Kion learned how to focus the Roar directly on his enemies. He uses this ability to take out Scar's army when they corner him and the others at the volcano.
  • Didn't See That Coming: Scar knew Kion would use the Roar on his army, but he didn't count on him using it directly, which is what Kion does to escape.
  • Dramatic Irony: The real fear that Kion has of losing Simba is played for utter horror and tragedy, but anyone who has seen Simba's Pride knows he lives.
  • Et Tu, Brute?: Averted; the Guard doesn't seem to be surprised at Ushari being evil and now a member of Scar's Legion of Doom. Beshte also doesn't react much to seeing his skink acquaintances from "Swept Away" being on the villains' side.
  • Evil Cannot Comprehend Good: Scar's entire plan relies on trapping Kion at the volcano, where he won't be able to use the roar without causing an eruption. He simply does not account at all for the idea that one could be capable of using the power of the roar with extreme restraint.
  • Find the Cure!: The basic plot of the episode.
  • Foregone Conclusion: Since Simba will be around for Kiara's adolescence, of course he's going to be fine after this.
  • Furry Confusion: Sumu is a sapient scorpion capable of speech, in contrast to most other arthropods in the show.
  • I Am Not Left-Handed: It's implied the three sets of animals allowed themselves to be defeated one at a time because they were advised to save their strength for the surprise.
  • I Never Said It Was Poison: Scar asks the Lion Guard if Simba was stung by a scorpion, despite none of them having said anything about a scorpion. This clues them in on the fact it was Scar who sent Sumu to sting Simba.
  • Karma Houdini: Sumu manages to get away from the Guard after stinging Simba and isn't seen in the big fight.
  • Legion of Doom: We finally see the "Army of Scar" fully assembled, and they're instrumental in Scar's plan to delay the Lion Guard.
  • Mass "Oh, Crap!":
    • The Pride Landers note  all have this reaction when Simba is stung by Sumu.
    • The Lion Guard later have one when they are surrounded by Scar's Army in the volcano.
    • Scar's Army have this reaction when Kion uses the roar against them to escape from the volcano.
  • Meaningful Name: Sumu means "poisonous" in Swahili, especially fitting given he's a scorpion.
  • Mid-Season Twist: The Lion Guard finally encounter Scar and his army for the first time.
  • Musicalis Interruptus: The Pride Landers break out into song to praise Simba, but the song only lasts a few seconds before Simba is stung.
  • Near-Villain Victory: Scar really comes dangerously close to winning, having the Lion Guard cornered by the Legion of Doom and forcing Kion in a position where using the Roar of The Elders would risk taking themselves out. The only reason they're spared is Kion manages to focus the roar on the Army of Scar directly, allowing them to escape.
  • Ocular Gushers: Timon and Pumbaa shed sprinkles of tears when the Guard returns to Pride Rock after chasing Sumu.
  • Pre-Asskicking One-Liner: By Kion just before using the Roar of the Elders to take out the Army of Scar directly.
Scar: Planning to use the Roar, Kion? Surely you realize the massive power of your roar will simply make the volcano erupt. Just like it did when you helped me return.
    Fuli: What's he talking about?
Kion: I don't know. But you don't know as much about the Roar as you think, Scar!
  • Race Against the Clock: Kion and the Guard have until sundown to get the volcanic ash and heal Simba otherwise he'll die.
  • Scary Scorpions: Sumu is one of Scar's finest assassins for this reason, as he is unusually fast, stealthy, and armed with deadly venom in his stinger.
  • Wham Episode: The Lion Guard and Makini finally meet Scar in person, and his Legion of Doom. Not to mention Mzingo's committee are allied with Scar now, and Ushari reveals to the Guard he is now against them.
