Recap / The Interns S 11 E 7

Go To

Alexei tries to learn more about Sophia's relationship with Gleb by asking Lyuba — who immediately realises that he must be jealous (even if he denies this). Soon afterwards, Sophia comes to Lyuba as well, worrying about Gleb; ever since he failed to perform in bed, he keeps avoiding sex like fire. Lyuba suggests to just give him more time to deal with this, but Sophia thinks that it would only make things worse; instead, she must act sudden and provoke him into having sex right here, in the hospital — only then he would live past that one failure. But how to make it sudden without getting busted by Bykov? Lyuba immediately reveals this plan to Gleb, who now wants to stop Sophia, as he knows that she wouldn't stop at just casual sex, and would force him to marry. Alexei also learns about Sophia's plan, and sees it as a sign her relationship with Gleb goes serious; despite denying that he has any interest, he asks Lyuba for details, but Lyuba playfully refuses, stating that she has no reason to tell him if he's "not interested". Now, if Alexei wants to stop it, he must find another source of information.

Bykov notices the patient Yartsev (with kidney problems, no less) just lying on a gurney in the middle of a corridor, instead of one of the wards. He takes him to interns' room, where he can wait for the doctor. Alexei is the first to point out that he "isn't their patient", which enrages Bykov enough to forcibly appoint Alexei to be Yartsev's doctor. Sophia asks "where they can rest", which Bykov dislikes because doctors are supposed to think about their patients first and foremost, and only then about "rest". Maxim tries to just act as sycophantic as possible in order to receive Bykov's on-call room instead... which Bykov doesn't like either. Maxim can't concentrate on medical literature while Alexei works with Yartsev right in the same room. Then Bykov sends another patient (they're just out of free wards), and Max, fed up with this, goes to Kisegach. Kisegach actually sides with Maxim, and orders Bykov to either free the room from patients, or let interns into on-call room; no, leaving them in a corridor is not an option. They can't do the former, so they would do the latter, whether Bykov likes it or not. Bykov complies, but provides interns with only a small zone which he separates with red duct tape, and prohibits to cross it. Maxim rushes to Kisegach immediately. Bykov reacts to this snitching attempt by decreasing the territory available to interns. When Max still fails to get the message, Bykov decreases it even further, leaving only a small part near the exit. Max still tries to go to Kisegach, but gets stopped by the other interns, who tells him that his attempt to "help" only makes the things worse for them all. Bykov agrees to that — and gives Max a night shift, for snitching.

Semyon plans to go on a one-day vacancy tomorrow, and only needs to find a tent: he would go fishing! He actually invites Phil with him, but Phil is too busy working under Kupitman. Semyon tries to assure him that he may just ask for a day off; he works so hard and deserves it! Phil tries, and gets refused. Lobanov offers his help with that: just as he deceived Gennadiy, Phil would deceive Kupitman. How? Lobanov's method involves acting like you've gone nuts due to overworking and stress, so your boss would order you to go take some rest. After Phil's (bad) attempt to imitate being on the brink, Kupitman finally catches up, and... announces that tomorrow, he wouldn't go to work, so Phil would spend a whole day working by himself, "resting" from Kupitman. Lobanov then tells him why his plan failed: Kupitman planned to go fishing with Semyon by himself, and Lobanov suggested to dump all work on Phil. Why he didn't warn Phil? Because he wanted to watch the show and laugh.

Sophia offers to take night night instead of Maxim, knowing that Gleb would also stay in the hospital. Alexei, knowing what she's planning to achieve, volunteers to stay, too (claiming that he wants to read about "one interesting case"). This means that he would sit here, even if she wants him gone. When flat-out asked whether he did this just to sabotage her attempts to have sex with Gleb, he says "yes". When Sophia leaves, Gleb reveals a whole story to Alexei and states that they are on the same side.

This episode provides examples of:

  • Bad Liar: Phil can't lie to save his life. Semyon suggests him a simple plan (playing a total psycho, so your boss would order you to take some rest), but he almost botches even this, due to being not emotional enough to be believable.
  • Digging Yourself Deeper: When Phil states that he's too busy to go fishing with Semyon, Lobanov states that Phil deserves it, because he "works hard, like a nigger on plantation". When Phil tries to reprimand him for it, he clumsily tries to "defend" himself by stating that "African-Americans are reading rap and playing basketball, while niggers are working; stop bothering me with your 'polite-correctness', Phil!"
  • Dude, Not Funny!: When Lyuba reveals to Gleb Sophia's "plan" and how it should work, why laughing at it, he not only states it to be unfunny, but also accuses her of making up some more gross details (which she admits).
  • Exact Words: When ordered by Kisegach to allow interns in on-call room, Bykov does this... but provides them with the small zone he separated by red lent, and prohibits to cross it on the pain of chopping off their legs; technically, they're in the room, so it's just as ordered! He does disobey when ordered to stop doing this, however.
  • False Reassurance: Kupitman catches up with the fact that Phil needs some rest from him... and suggests that he would not go to work tomorrow, allowing Phil to work alone.
  • Gone Horribly Wrong: Phil's attempts to make Kupitman think that Phil needs some rest from working under Kupitman (so Phil may go fishing with Semyon) results in Kupitman agreeing... and freeing Phil from himself by leaving Phil to work alone for a day. However, later Lobanov reveals that Kupitman has planned to do that all along, and only pretended as a prank on Phil.
  • Hair-Trigger Temper: Invoked and Exploited as part of Lobanov's plan: if you want to receive a bonus vacation from your boss, act like you went nuts from work-related stress, so they would offer you some rest to help with it. It's how Semyon deceived Gennadiy to allow him to leave so he may go fishing. Now, he suggests Phil to try the same with Kupitman.
  • Interrupted Intimacy: Alexei just keeps appearing at worst moments, ruining Sophia's attempts to seduce Gleb. Unknowingly to Alexei (who does it intentionally as part of his plan to destroy Sophia's growing relationship with Gleb, so he may "take her for himself"), Gleb actually appreciates this, since he wants nothing to do with Sophia and just has no way to tell her so directly.
  • Love Triangle: By the end of the episode, it's officially established that Sophia loves Gleb, Alexei loves Sophia, and Gleb wants nothing to do with either of them.
  • The Millstone: Maxim keeps complaining to Kisegach about Bykov giving them too small territory, which makes Bykov taking even more of their territory each time. At one point, the other interns tells him to stop, as he only makes things worse for them all.
  • Open Mouth, Insert Foot: When Bykov provides interns with new patient, the guy called Yartsev, Alexei complains that "he is not even their patient" — and gets forcibly assigned to become Yartsev's doctor. For Bykov, it only matters that they are patients, not whose patients they are, and Alexei is acting egoistically.
  • Put on a Bus: Twins Valera and Igor quit working under Bykov — in fact, two weeks ago from the episode's events; Bykov was just too absent-minded to notice.
  • Relationship Sabotage: Alexei aims to prevent Sophia from sticking with Gleb, as by now he wants her for himself.
  • Troll: Kupitman planned to go fishing with Semyon himself, leaving Phil to work alone. Lobanov didn't inform Phil about it simply so he can watch the show and laugh as Phil tries to "deceive" Kupitman.
