Molly is in serious peril when the Ghost Council take note of the alarming increase in joy in Brighton and send out agent Jinx to deal with it. Scratch must keep his best friend out of harm's way and fool Jinx into believing everything is going fine.

Tropes:

  • Cliffhanger: The episode ends with Jinx taking Scratch back to the Ghost World to face the Ghost Council.
  • Emotion Eater: It is revealed that Scratch and other ghosts have to spread misery so that the Chairman can feed on it.
  • Foreshadowing: Jinx's Villain Song whilst searching through Brighton is named "Killjoy." At the end, once she discovers Molly is the source of Joy she's been seeking, she reveals that her actual mission is literally to "kill any source of joy."
  • Heroic Sacrifice: In order to save Molly from being beheaded by Jinx, Scratch pushes her out the way and confirms their friendship in the process, which is revealed to be the real motivation behind Jinx's Joyhunt, giving her and the Ghost Council an excuse to banish Scratch to the Flow of Failed Phantoms.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Jerk: Jinx seems to have several Pet the Dog moments when she tells Scratch that she will cover for him and his failures at the Ghost Council. At the end she reveals that she and the Ghost Council have set Scratch up, captures him, and drags him into the Ghost World to face the Council.
  • Kill the Cutie: Averted, but Jinx does come dangerously close to killing Molly simply for being positive and joyful.
  • The Killjoy: Jinx has the mission to find and destroy the source of joy in Brighton and all attempts to distract her fail quickly. Her Villain Song is even named Killjoy.
  • Never Say "Die": When Jinx says she will eliminate joy with a scythe, Scratch realizes she might kill Molly.
  • Oh, Crap!: This is Scratch's reaction when Jinx explains what her job as a Joy Hunter truly entails.
Jinx: That's why I'm here; to find the joy and eliminate it. (pulls out a massive scythe) Permanently.
Scratch: Eliminate joy? You mean, eliminate Molly?!
  • The Reveal: Ghosts spread misery so the Chairman can feed on it and Scratch would have already known that had he not slept through orientation.
  • Sadist: The Reveal at the end that Jinx, and by extension, the Ghost Council, suspected Molly and Scratch's friendship the whole time and were intentionally trying to pressure him into confessing this so they would have an excuse to banish him to the Flow of Failed Phantoms turns them into this. Jinx even intentionally plays dumb and gives Scratch several Hope Spots that she'll leave without trying to eliminate Molly just to make him squirm more before he reaches his breaking point.
  • Say My Name: Molly calls out Scratch's name after Jinx drags him back through the portal.
  • Shout-Out: Jinx's song "Killjoy" is done as a parody of a typical James Bond title sequence.
  • Special Edition Title: When Scratch is dragged back to the ghost world, the title card has the The Ghost and made of his blue ectoplasm blow away in the wind, leaving only Molly McGee behind. Also, the last line of the theme song does not play.
  • Villain Song: Jinx's song "Killjoy" describes her very well. She will hunt down and destroy every source of joy and nothing will stop her.
  • Wham Episode: It turns out that the Ghost Council and Jinx were already onto Scratch, his "unnatural" friendship with Molly is exposed, and he is taken to the Ghost World so that he can be banished into the Flow of Failed Phantoms.
  • Would Hurt a Child: When Jinx realizes that Molly is behind the joy in Brighton, Jinx immediately decides to end the "problem" permanently via a scythe to the neck.

"SCRAAAAAATCH!"
