Tropes

  • Aesop Amnesia: Invoked by Mark in how Caitlin is trying desperately to resurrect Frost who died in part because of how Caitlin trying desperately to resurrect Ronnie helped create Deathstorm. Of course, in the end he agrees to help her, making his remark hypocritical.
  • Bad Future: Only slightly, as Barry sees a glimpse of Vanya being the editor-in-chief.
  • The Bus Came Back:
    • Tinya's mom Renee briefly appears in the Still Force.
    • Nora returns from 2049 to help find her mother.
  • …But He Sounds Handsome: Nora is introduced writing an article about how great XS is.
  • Call-Back:
    • A newspaper in the Still Force mentions Zoom and Godspeed.
    • Wally's mediation techniques are brought up (Barry meditates to contact Joe from inside the Still Force).
  • Dutch Angle: A number of scenes in the Still Force are filmed this way, something which Eric Wallace specifically noted, to give the realm a distinct appearance.invoked
  • Eldritch Location: The Still Force due to the time sickness that is affecting it. Past, Present and Future constantly intertwine.
  • "Eureka!" Moment: Barry realizes that he, having created it, he has a piece of the Still Force inside himself and can figure out to control it and get out of the prison.
  • Face–Heel Turn: Deon lures Barry into the Still Force with the stated purpose of finding Iris but actually uses him to find an orb of green plasma energy that he absorbs into himself before trying to trap Barry and Nora West-Allen in the Still Force. Why he's become like this or what he's actually up to is completely unknown.
  • Follow in My Footsteps: Nora reveals that rather than become a lab tech like her previous self did, she's a reporter like her mother. Barry assures her he's still proud, even if she's not a cop as happy she's still emulating her parents.
  • Hell Is That Noise: The screaming noise that is heard both times when Deon appears.
  • Internal Reveal: The Team learns that Iris is missing again.
  • Jerkass Has a Point: Tinya isn't wrong to point out that as far as she can tell, Iris barged into her life, threatened her (albeit later revealing that she was bluffing), connected her with her real mother, and then essentially killed her. While it wasn't Iris's fault or intention at all, and this episode reveals that her mom is actually still alive, albeit trapped in the Still Force, from Tinya's perspective Iris has done almost nothing but harm her.
  • Lured into a Trap: Deon tells Nora that Barry needs her help, which results in her being trapped in the Still Force as well.
  • Negated Moment of Awesome: Twice Barry and Nora run into a barrier while trying to break out of the Still Force. They succeed with the third try though.
  • Nice Job Breaking It, Hero: Chuck realizes an explosive device used in a robbery was built from the designs he'd been sharing on his blog. He brings up how Allegra warned him about sharing that stuff online although she does say he's not responsible for how someone uses them. It's ultimately subverted when it turns out the person actually wasn't using it in a malicious way and what happened was entirely an accident, and one where no one even got hurt.
  • Properly Paranoid: Joe suspects that Barry rushing in to the Still Force headfirst on Deon's advice is a sketchy idea. Unsurprisingly, he turns out to be right.
  • "Shaggy Dog" Story: By the end of the episode Barry is no closer at all to finding Iris.
  • Shout-Out: Mark mentions Frankenstein Created Woman, comparing Caitlin's plan to resurrect Frost with it.
  • So Proud of You: Barry, when Nora tells him that she is a reporter.
  • Time Stands Still: When Deon comes to pick up Barry.
  • Wham Shot: Someone remotely accessing Chester's computer and downloading all its files.
