Recap / Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 2012 S 4 E 18 Mutant Gangland

Go To

Don Vizioso's gang tracks the Turtles with a slew of Anti-Mutant weapons.

  • Ascended Extra: Don Vizioso made a minor appearance in "Casey Jones Vs. the Underworld" and later a cameo in "Meet Mondo Gecko", and becomes a much more prominent antagonist of the series as of this episode.
  • Bank Robbery: Raph falls into one of these, which is a trap set by Vizioso.
  • The Bus Came Back: The Mutanimals return, as does Don Vizioso.
  • Crazy-Prepared: Vizioso, who is still virtually immobile, has his chair turn into a flying jetpack when he meets the Turtles.
  • Fantastic Racism: Don Vizioso and his thugs despise the fact that there are mutants running around New York; he's using new equipment to get rid of them.
  • Foreshadowing: Splinter telling the turtles that he isn't going to be around forever and that they can't expect anything, even family to last forever. Sadly, 8 episodes later, he was dead.
  • From Bad to Worse: After Donnie added fuel to the fire by mocking Raph, Raph ends up quitting the team yet again. Even Splinter thought that what Donnie did was so uncalled for and calls him out on it after Raph storms out of the lair.
Donnie: (whines mockingly) "No one appreciates me." Back on the "Everyone loves Leo" routine? Get some new material, you big baby.
    (Mikey laughs)
Raph: (angrily) That's it! If you guys don't want to take this as seriously as I do, then I quit! I'm done! Through! Adios!
  • It's All My Fault: Raph and Donnie had this moment
    • Raph has this moment after Donnie and Mondo Gecko get taken and realizing how his anger got the best of him, again.
    • Donnie had this moment when he hangs his head down in shame after Splinter chastises him for mocking Raph.
  • Jerkass Ball: While Jerkass Has a Point about Splinter appearing to favor Leo, in this instance, Raphael was trying to basically turn a routine sparring session into a No-Holds-Barred Beatdown, and bashing Leo's face in wasn't going to help them against the Shredder. Responding to Splinter's "Hey, you're not supposed to use training to go all out on your brother" with "Fine, I quit!" (only because Donnie mocked him) did not make him look sympathetic. To his credit, Raph later experiences Jerkass Realization and apologizes (as does Donnie for provoking him further).
  • Jerkass Has a Point:
    • Raph has a point when he points out when it becomes between his Sibling Rivalry with Leo, Splinter always favors Leo and stands up for him when he (Raph) is the only one that takes things seriously when the others don't. Splinter doesn't deny this point and takes it in perspective when he scolds Donnie for making fun of Raph and inflaming the situation.
  • Jerkass Realization:
    • Raph realizing that his Hair-Trigger Temper had led to Donnie and Mondo Gecko getting captured by Vizioso's goons.
    • Donnie had one himself when he realizes that he shouldn't have push Raph's buttons too far after Splinter calls him out for making Raph quit the team.
  • Mythology Gag:
    • The Hammer bears resemblance to the Mech Wreckers, a quartet of mech suits piloted by the 2003 Turtles, and later Karai's Foot Clan in said series.
    • Don Vizioso mentions turning a mutant over to Doctor Feral — a character from the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles & Other Strangeness tabletop RPG— for experimentation.
  • No Celebrities Were Harmed: Don Vizioso's henchman "The Hammer" looks and sounds a lot like Sylvester Stallone.
  • No-Holds-Barred Beatdown: Raph switches from using weapons to hand to hand combat and he went all out on Leo, almost showing no mercy. Luckily after some time, Splinter intervenes and stops Raph.
  • Noodle Incident: When the turtles ask why Pigeon Pete isn't there, Slash responds with "We don't talk about Pigeon Pete". Sometimes, some things are left better unsaid.
  • Shout-Out: Vizioso and his men refer to the mutants as "muties", a slur originating from the X-Men comics.
  • Throw the Dog a Bone: Mondo Gecko successfully takes down a goon.
  • What Happened to the Mouse?: Even though the Mutanimals appear, Muckman and Pigeon Pete do not; Pete gets a Noodle Incident reference to indicate he's been Put on a Bus.
  • What the Hell, Hero?: Two scenes in the episode had this moment
    • Raph gives one to Splinter for his constant favoritism towards Leo and for him not bothering to see that the others goof off and mess around all the time.
Raph: Sensei, why do you always stick up for Leo? I'm the one who takes training seriously. The rest of them are just goofing off all the time.
    • When Raph leaves the lair in anger after Donnie unnecessarily mocks him, Splinter stands up for him and calls Donnie out for making the problem worse.
Splinter: You have a brilliant mind, Donatello. Yet you see a fire and try to put it out with gasoline.
