Recap / Static Shock S 3 E 9 A League Of Their Own Part 1

Go To

The Justice League Watchtower is in danger of crashing to Earth. Batman decides to ask Static for help in powering it up, and the League saves Static and Gear from a Bang Baby ambush. The duo is a bit disappointed that the greatest heroes on Earth are treating them as inconvenient guests, but they soon have to act when Braniac appears in the Watchtower computer, while the League is away.

Tropes for this episode include:

  • Cliffhanger: Just as the duo is winding down, Backpack attacks Gear. Brainiac reveals that he has taken over the tiny computer, and has plans for Richie.
  • Costume Evolution: In this episode and its second part, Batman wears the bat-suit that he was wearing at the time in Justice League and Justice League Unlimited as opposed to wearing his bat-suit from The New Batman Adventures just like in the previous episodes he crossed over into. Funnily enough, he goes back to his TNBA batsuit a few episodes later, in "Future Shock".
  • Crossover: With Justice League.
  • Have You Told Anyone Else?: Static and Gear are confused as to why Brainiac is telling him the plan to store all of Earth's knowledge, until Static realizes that it's an ambush.
  • Logical Weakness: Being a computer program, Brainiac doesn't perform as efficiently when the system's memory storage is at low capacity while trying to run several other functions at once. Gear takes advantage of this by downloading the same song billions of times to crash Brainiac.
  • Mundane Made Awesome: Gear overloads Braniac by downloading a lot of music, the way his home computer works.
  • Non Sequitur, *Thud*: Just before Brainiac shuts down, he stutters a We Will Meet Again warning that concludes in him saying he will "LAY THE FUNK DOWN!" Justified, as this is likely a lyric from the song Gear was repeatedly downloading to shut him down.
  • Sequel Episode: This two-parter episode takes place almost immediately after the Justice League episode "Twilight" due to the Justice League having a piece of Brainiac.
  • Snipe Hunt: Braniac concocts a fake distress signal to get the League out of the tower. Gear manages to transmit a message saying that the distress signal is a phony.
  • Squee: Both Static and Gear are excited about visiting the Watchtower.
  • Scream Discretion Shot: The scene cuts to the outside of the gas station as Braniac attacks Gear.
  • This Cannot Be!: Brainiac once he starts crashing.
  • Throw the Dog a Bone: After treating Gear as an annoyance, Hawkgirl agrees he can take one picture after he manages to crash Braniac.
  • Voice of the Legion: Brainiac receives this for this two-parter.
  • We Will Meet Again: Brainiac insists that he will be back one day, that day being the next part of the crossover.
  • Why Don't You Just Shoot Him?: Averted; Braniac throws all of the tower's defenses at Static and Gear, but they prove more resilient. Backpack proves to be a huge help.
