<<< Previous - Next >>>

Riley is captured and it is up to Will to save her with help from the others. Things do not go as planned as Wolfgang's uncle is discovered to be wearing a bulletproof vest after a shoot-out, but after some help from Kala he gets another chance, only to confess to his uncle that he strangled and killed his abusive father when he was a teenager, burning his body in a car. Wolfgang brutally shoots his uncle repeatedly in the face, saying that he too is a monster. Seeing that Kala has witnessed the whole thing, he tells her that she should marry Rajan as he himself is too dangerous. The last scene shows Riley on a ferry with a drugged Will surrounded by the other sensates; it is the first time the entire cluster is seen together.

Tropes present in this episode:

  • Ate His Gun: Riley almost does this to protect everyone else, but Will talks her out of it.
  • Badass Boast:
    Will: Shit, four guards!
    Sun: Is that all?
  • Bulletproof Vest: Will works out that Wolfgang's uncle is wearing a vest because he knows what bullets hitting Kevlar sounds like.
Wolfgang: How was I supposed to know he'd be wearing a bulletproof vest? Who wears a bulletproof vest in real life?!
  • Cool Car: The red Porsche 911 that Will drives in Iceland. Also exploited — Will is forced to destroy it to distract the workers at the facility where Riley is. The whole plan hinges on the idea that a bunch of hetero-normative men will be unable to stand such a beautiful car going up in a cloud of smoke, and their misery will allow Will to slip past them. It works.
    Guard 1: Now that's a real shame.
    Guard 2: It's a Fourteen!
Guard 3: Not even a year old!
    • Even Will isn't immune.
Nomi: Look at you, you're hesitating.
Will: ...it's a really nice car.
  • Despair Event Horizon:
    • Riley's flashbacks show her reaching this after her baby daughter freezes to death.
    • Jonas crosses it after Will meets Whispers face to face, claiming that Whispers has already won and that Will should just give up.
  • Foreshadowing: Wolfgang's final conversation with Sergei where he mentions that Sergei "knew what was going on" but didn't do anything. What Sergei knew will be revealed in the Grand Finale.
  • Hassle-Free Hotwire: Capheus hotwires the ambulance being used as a getaway vehicle using the skills he picked up stealing the Van Damn back from people who stole it from him.
  • Immune to Drugs: Riley's history of hard drug use means the sedatives BPO give her don't work as well as they should. The medics are forced to knock her out completely to stop her from trying to escape. Jonas notes this is actually a good thing as it means she's unconscious when Whispers arrives, so he can't make eye contact with her.
  • MacGyvering: Kala builds a surprisingly powerful bomb with basic kitchen supplies.
  • Maternity Crisis: We finally see the full version of Riley's flashbacks to her giving birth in an overturned car during a blizzard.
  • Oh, Crap!: Will reacts this way when he realises he made eye contact with Whispers.
  • Riding into the Sunset: The final shot of the episode is Riley and Will on Sven's boat as it sails towards the setting sun.
  • Roaring Rampage of Revenge: Wolfgang goes on one to destroy his uncle.
  • Self-Made Orphan: Wolfgang reveals to his uncle, before killing him, that he was the one to kill his own abusive bastard of a father.
  • Social Engineering in the form of Clipboard of Authority: Lito helps Will impersonate a BPO scientist to chat up an aide to Whispers, charming her into inadvertently giving him/them Riley's room number.
  • Stock Scream: The first guard that Sun throws over the railing emits the classic Wilhelm Scream as he falls down.
  • Title Drop: Riley tells Will this when she is flashing back to her daughter's death.
  • Trauma Button: Having to drive through the mountains triggers Riley's trauma from the deaths of her husband and baby. She begs Will to stop driving, runs out across the hilltop and drops to her knees cradling an imaginary baby.
